20080212436 | Optical Pick-Up and/or Recording Device - For optical data storage applications a near field optical system can be used. In near field optical systems an accurate control of the distance between the solid immersion lens and the disc surface is crucial. After the correction of a tilt between the lens and the disc, the laser beam may not always be parallel to the optical axis. This has a detrimental effect on the gap signal used for the distance control. The optical head of the invention comprises a gap signal correcting unit to take care of such detrimental effects. | 09-04-2008 |

The invention also related to a near field optical scanning apparatus enabled to clean a refractive element according to the said method. | 09-04-2008 |
20080225669 | Method of Checking the Cleanness Status of a Refractive Element and Optical Scanning Apparatus of Th Enear Field Type - A method of checking the cleanness status of an optical exit face of a refractive element of an optical scanning apparatus of the near field type, the method comprising step of generating a near field control signal proportional to ratio between the intensity of an optical radiation beam that is internally reflected from the optical exit face of the refractive element and the intensity of a corresponding incident optical radiation beam; measuring the near field control signal when the optical exit face of the refractive element is further away from an optical disc than a near field distance; comparing the measured near field control signal with a predetermined threshold value; deciding the refractive element is clean if the measured near field control signal is above the predetermined threshold value. | 09-18-2008 |
20080259743 | Method and apparatus for phase and/or copy window control for use with a domain expansion recording medium and record carrier - The present invention relates to a method, apparatus and record carrier for controlling read-out and/or synchronization between an external magnetic field and written data during a reading operation from a magneto-optical recording medium comprising a storage layer and a read-out layer. An expanded domain leading to a pulse in a reading signal is generated in said read-out layer by copying a mark region from said storage layer to said read-out layer upon heating by a radiation power and with the help of the external magnetic field. The waveform of the reading signal is analyzed, and the analyzing result is used for correcting a phase deviation and/or for controlling a copy window size of the mark copying. Thereby, phase errors can be corrected for any size of the copy window. Even small changes in the copy window can be detected and corrected. | 10-23-2008 |
20080304374 | Initial Focus Optimization for an Optical Scanning Device - In a particular type of high-density optical recording systems, a solid immersion lens (SIL) is used in the objective system to focus a radiation beam onto an information layer of an optical record carrier. The distance between the exit surface of the SIL and the entrance surface of the record carrier is typically 25 nm to allow evanescent coupling of the radiation from the SIL to the optical record carrier for a system using a blue laser as radiation source. Such a system is also called a near-field system, deriving its name from the near field formed by the evanescent wave at the exit face of the SIL. A suitable gap signal, representing the width of the gap, is used to control the width of the gap during operation of the system. Tolerances in the optical elements and opto-mechanical components of the optical system of the optical recording system can lead to an offset in the position of the focus point of the objective system. The offset can be larger than the typically used gap width for such a recording system. This can lead to direct contact between the SIL and the record carrier, which may result in damaging one or both of them. The invention discloses a method and implementation for a focus initialization correcting the focus offset of the optical system used to read out or record the optical record carrier such that a reliable and robust gap signal can be derived for gap width control. | 12-11-2008 |
