20130084007 | GRAPH-BASED SEGMENTATION INTEGRATING VISIBLE AND NIR INFORMATION - A method for segmenting an image includes extracting unary potentials for pixels of the input image. These can be based for each of a set of possible labels, on information for a first channel in the image, such as in the visible range of the spectrum. Pairwise potentials are extracted for neighboring pairs of pixels of the image. These can be based on information for a second channel in the image, such as in the infrared range of the spectrum. An objective function is optimized over pixels of the input image to identify labels for the pixels. The objective function is based on a combination of ones of the extracted unary and pairwise potentials. The image is then segmented, based on the identified pixel labels. The method and system can provide an improvement in segmentation over methods which use only the visible information. | 04-04-2013 |

20080257512 | Single Ply Tissue Products Surface Treated With A Softening Agent - Tissue products are described that have been topically treated with a chemical additive, such as a softener. The softener may be, for instance, a polysiloxane. The polysiloxane is topically applied to a tissue sheet, such as a single ply sheet, so as to form a Z-directional gradient in the sheet. Particular, most of the polysiloxane remains on the surface of the tissue product as opposed to migrating to the center of the sheet. In this manner, tissue sheets are formed with improved softness at lower levels of polysiloxane and without the need for applying any surfactants to the sheet. A system for applying chemical additives to tissue sheets is also described. The system includes a chemical additive applicator, such as a meltblown die that emits the chemical additive through a plurality of orifices. In one embodiment, the system includes a device for periodically cleaning the orifices during application of the chemical additive. 20110177038 | Inhibition of Tumor Growth via Peroxiredoxin 3 - Deregulated expression of the c-Myc transcription factor is found in a wide variety of human tumors. Because of this significant role in oncogenesis, considerable effort has been devoted to elucidating the molecular program initiated by deregulated c-myc expression. The primary transforming activity of Myc is thought to arise through transcriptional regulation of numerous target genes. Thus far, Myc target genes involved in mitochondrial function have not been characterized in depth. Here, we describe a nuclear c-Myc target gene, PRDX3, which encodes a mitochondrial protein of the peroxiredoxin gene family. Expression of PRDX3 is induced by the mycER system and is reduced in c-myc−/− cells. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis spanning the entire PRDX3 genomic sequence reveals that Myc binds preferentially to a 930-bp region surrounding exon 1. We show that PRDX3 is required for Myc-mediated proliferation, transformation, and apoptosis after glucose withdrawal. Results using mitochondria-specific fluorescent probes demonstrate that PRDX3 is essential for maintaining mitochondrial mass and membrane potential in transformed rat and human cells. These data provide evidence that PRDX3 is a c-Myc target gene that is required to maintain normal mitochondrial function. | 07-21-2011 |
