20100003171 | Gas treatment device - Exhaust gas treatment is based on metal foams using catalytic coatings. A catalytic converter for diesel and gasoline engines includes oxidation catalysts, 3-way catalysts, de-NOx catalysts, NH3 slip catalysts. Foam high surface areas and high mixing rates enhance catalytic performance. Particulate filtration in both diesel and direct injection gasoline engines uses deep bed filtration. A multiple-pass radial flow uses more than one foam segments, separated by a diaphragm. Filtration, pressure drop and catalytic performance are enhanced using variable foam porosities in axial and radial flow directions and non-uniform catalyst coatings. More than one catalytic functionalities may be incorporated in a single shell. Secondary foam segments are placed within main foam segments. Diaphragms at the entrance and exit of the external shell allow the flow to be divided between the main and the secondary foam segments according to the respective flow resistances. | 01-07-2010 |

20080209872 | Filtering device for diesel engine exhaust gas - A filtering device for diesel engines is based on metal foams. In order to achieve high filtration efficiency with low pressure drop using deep bed filtration metal foams, a radial flow concept is used based on a “porosity gradient”. The foams can also be coated with catalytically active material to enhance soot oxidation (regeneration), as well as reduction of other exhaust gas pollutants (CO, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides). This may be accomplished by using non-uniform amounts of catalytic materials within the filter depending on the targeted application. An additional secondary filter segment may be placed within the metal support of the main filter segment. The metallic diaphragms at the entrance and exit of the external shell are designed in such a way as to allow the flow to be divided between the main and the secondary filter segments according to the respective flow resistances. | 09-04-2008 |
20100058878 | DILUTER FOR EXHAUST GAS SAMPLING AND METHOD THEREFOR - The present invention relates to a device used for the dilution of exhaust gas (diluter) and in particular for engines or vehicles. More particularly, the invention relates to a device and a method which may maintain a constant dilution ratio regardless of the exhaust gas backpressure in the exhaust line, without using any moving parts. The proposed diluter utilizes a very small fraction of the exhaust gas, sampled through a capillary duct, simply immersed to the exhaust flow, which is otherwise freely exhausting to the atmosphere. The sample flowrate through the capillary is achieved by maintaining a regulated underpressure at the capillary outlet. The diluted exhaust is then collected in a stabilization chamber, where temperature, humidity and residence time may be adjusted to condition the collected aerosol at will. Multiple capillaries and stabilization chambers may be cascaded to increase the dilution ratios. After the final dilution stage, particle samples may be collected on a filter for gravimetric determination or analyzed by number counters, surface monitors or any other technique utilized for the physical or chemical characterization of particles. In a preferred embodiment the capillary duct is realized with a hypodermic needle and two cascaded hypodermic needles/stabilization chambers are combined to provide the desired dilution ratio. In another embodiment, exhaust gas may be led to the diluter's capillary duct by means of two probes, located respectively upstream and downstream of any aftertreatment device, which needs to be characterized. By means of shut-off valves, exhaust gas may be fed to the diluter's capillary by either the upstream or the downstream probe, thus providing an estimate of the filtration efficiency of the device. | 03-11-2010 |
