20090210037 | Device and method for low intensity optical hair growth control - The present invention discloses a device and a method for controlling growth of hair on human skin with low doses of electromagnetic radiation, and a device for carrying out the method. In the method, radiation of a suitable spectrum is applied to the skin, in one or more pulses of between 1 and 100 ms, and with maximum fluencies on the skin between 1 and 12 J/cm2. By applying such low fluencies and at controlled pulse durations, follicles of the hairs are induced to the catagen phase. This means that the growth of the hairs of those follicles will stop. Although the method is not primarily aimed at immediate hair removal, hairs may be shed subsequently. In any case, further growth may be stopped for prolonged periods of time. The main advantage of the method is that the risk of damage to the skin is minimized. | 08-20-2009 |

20100166286 | Motion artefact reduction in CT scanning - An example of sporadic motion that causes difficulty in CT scanning is gas pockets moving around the rectum. The invention allows the automatic detection of such movements, by enhancing low density features around the prostate in the individual X-ray images, projecting these features on the cranio-caudal axis (assuming that the gas predominantly moves in this direction) to form a 1-dimensional image, and combining successive ID projections to form a 2D image. Moving gas will produce tilted lines in this image, identifying an angular range that needs to be discarded. Such a process can be used in an image processing apparatus of a CT scanner. | 07-01-2010 |
20110206178 | On-line cone beam CT reconstruction - An in-line 4D cone beam CT reconstruction algorithm, i.e. one that works in parallel with image acquisition, comprises an imaging system for a object exhibiting internal periodic motion comprising a source of penetrating radiation and a two-dimensional detector for the radiation, the source and the detector being rotatable around an axis lying on the beam path from the source to the detector, a storage means for images obtained from the detector, a control means for initiating rotation of the source and the detector and for obtaining images from the detector at a plurality of rotation angles over time, a processing means for (i) condensing the images in a direction transverse to an axis to produce a one-dimensional image, (ii) collating the one-dimensional images obtained up to that point side-by-side into a two dimensional image, (iii); analysing the two-dimensional image thus obtained to identify periodic patterns, (iv) allocating phase information to the images in the storage means on the basis of that analysis, (v) selecting images in the storage means having like phase information, and (vi) backprojecting the selected images, the control means being adapted to invoke the processing means after a plurality of images have been placed in the storage means, and then place further images in the storage means and further invoke the processing means. Thus, we queue a limited number of projection images such that the phase determination algorithm can look-ahead. At regular intervals, the queue is scanned and those images which have enough look-ahead to obtain phase information are filtered and back-projected. The algorithm thus keeps up with the image acquisition speed and produces a 4D reconstruction within a few seconds of the end of scanning. A local rigid registration algorithm is then used to match the tumor region defined in the mid-ventilation frame of our 4D planning CT with each of the phases of the 4D CBCT. An animation technique provides rapid visual verification; the mean position of the tumor is computed and used for correction, while the amplitude is reviewed to validate the margin. | 08-25-2011 |
20120326057 | Methods and Systems for Protecting Critical Structures During Radiation Treatment - Methods and systems are provided for protecting a critical structure during the administration of radiation treatment to a patient. A register receives proposed positions for one or more radiation beams with respect to a critical structure. A processor predicts a cumulative dose volume for the critical structure based on the dose distribution, and determines if the cumulative dose volume exceeds a tolerance value. If the cumulative dose volume exceeds the tolerance value, the dose distribution may be translated at least in part based on a relationship between the cumulative dose volume and the dose distribution position. | 12-27-2012 |
