20100322518IMAGE SEGMENTATION BY HIERARCHIAL AGGLOMERATION OF POLYGONS USING ECOLOGICAL STATISTICS - A method for rapid hierarchical image segmentation based on perceptually driven contour completion and scene statistics is disclosed. The method begins with an initial fine-scale segmentation of an image, such as obtained by perceptual completion of partial contours into polygonal regions using region-contour correspondences established by Delaunay triangulation of edge pixels as implemented in VISTA. The resulting polygons are analyzed with respect to their size and color/intensity distributions and the structural properties of their boundaries. Statistical estimates of granularity of size, similarity of color, texture, and saliency of intervening boundaries are computed and formulated into logical (Boolean) predicates. The combined satisfiability of these Boolean predicates by a pair of adjacent polygons at a given segmentation level qualifies them for merging into a larger polygon representing a coarser, larger-scale feature of the pixel image and collectively obtains the next level of polygonal segments in a hierarchy of fine-to-coarse segmentations. The iterative application of this process precipitates textured regions as polygons with highly convolved boundaries and helps distinguish them from objects which typically have more regular boundaries. The method yields a multiscale decomposition of an image into constituent features that enjoy a hierarchical relationship with features at finer and coarser scales. This provides a traversable graph structure from which feature content and context in terms of other features can be derived, aiding in automated image understanding tasks. The method disclosed is highly efficient and can be used to decompose and analyze large images.12-23-2010

20110274352Image Segmentation Using Star-Convexity Constraints - Image segmentation using star-convexity constraints is described. In an example, user input specifies positions of one or more star centers in a foreground to be segmented from a background of an image. In embodiments, an energy function is used to express the problem of segmenting the image and that energy function incorporates a star-convexity constraint which limits the number of possible solutions. For example, the star-convexity constraint may be that, for any point p inside the foreground, all points on a shortest path (which may be geodesic or Euclidean) between the nearest star center and p also lie inside the foreground. In some examples continuous star centers such as lines are used. In embodiments a user may iteratively edit the star centers by adding brush strokes to the image in order to progressively change the star-convexity constraints and obtain an accurate segmentation.11-10-2011

20110222769DOCUMENT PAGE SEGMENTATION IN OPTICAL CHARACTER RECOGNITION - Page segmentation in an optical character recognition process is performed to detect textual objects and/or image objects. Textual objects in an input gray scale image are detected by selecting candidates for native lines which are sets of horizontally neighboring connected components (i.e., subsets of image pixels where each pixel from the set is connected with all remaining pixels from the set) having similar vertical statistics defined by values of baseline (the line upon which most text characters “sit”) and mean line (the line under which most of the characters “hang”). Binary classification is performed on the native line candidates to classify them as textual or non-textual through examination of any embedded regularity. Image objects are indirectly detected by detecting the image's background using the detected text to define the background. Once the background is detected, what remains (i.e., the non-background) is an image object.09-15-2011

At each remaining interest point, a local motion field filter is applied to the smoothed gradients by computing a structure proximity between sets of pixels in the local region and the interest point. The motion at a pixel/pixel set is enhanced or weakened based on its structure proximity with the interest point (nearer pixels are enhanced).12-22-2011
20110311136CROSS-DOMAIN BROWSER PRE-FETCHING THROUGH DATA TRANSCODING - Browser application programs may be prevented from performing cross-domain retrieval of anything other than image files. To enable browsers to pre-fetch resources utilizable by code executing in a browser-based programmatic environment, without having to wait for the environment, and the code, to be instantiated and make the cross-domain request themselves, the cross-domain resources can be transcoded into image files. Once retrieved, these “image” files can be retained locally in a browser cache and provided to the code executing in the browser-based programmatic environment from there much more quickly. Then the code can decode the “image” and extract the original resource file, which the code can then utilize. The transcoding of resources into image files can be performed by first determining the height and width of an image file that will result in the least amount of wasted space when the resource is transcoded into it.12-22-2011
