The method includes providing a pump element pumping event; disabling overlapping injectors during a test-period that includes the pumping event; measuring pressure in the rail at at least two engine crank angles surrounding the pumping event during the test period; and determining a fuel delivery rate value for the pump based on the measured rail pressures. Methods and apparatus also are provided for determining quantitative leakage rate in the fuel supply system of a fuel injected IC engine, the fuel system including a fuel pump with one or more pumping elements supplying injectors via a fuel rail. The method includes establishing steady state engine operating conditions with fuel rail pressure at a predetermined value; disabling all overlapping injectors and all pumping events during a test period; measuring rail pressure at preselected first and second crank angles during the test period, the first crank angle being advanced relative to the second crank angle; and calculating the leakage rate based on a pressure drop determined from the measured rail pressure at the first crank angle and the measured rail pressure at the second crank angle. | 12-11-2008 |
20080302175 | Method and apparatus for determining correct installation for gear-driven fuel pump on a fuel injected IC engine - Methods and apparatus are disclosed for detecting whether a gear-driven fuel pump has been installed correctly in a fuel injected IC engine, the pump gear being driven by an engine gear to provide fuel to injectors via a fuel rail. The method may include providing a pump element pumping event. The method may also include disabling overlapping fuel injectors and overlapping pumping events during the test period surrounding the selected pumping event, and measuring the pressure in the rail during the pumping event with the overlapping injectors disabled, the at least two different engine crank angles surrounding the pumping event. The method also may further include determining from the measured rail pressures whether the pumping event occurred at a desired engine crank angle. Apparatus to carry out the methods may include a computer programmed for controlling the sequence of the providing, disabling, measuring, and determining functions, as well as software for carrying out the respective functions. | 12-11-2008 |
20090095061 | ABNORMALITY DETECTION DEVICE OF FUEL PUMP - An abnormality detection device of a fuel pump reduces costs and prevents detection error or breakdown by making the fuel pressure sensor unnecessary. The abnormality detection device includes an abnormality detection circuit, a fuel pump driving voltage detection unit to detect the voltage value of an abnormality detection circuit, and a meter. The abnormality detection circuit is constituted by the circuit including a resistance disposed between a battery side of the fuel pump motor to drive the fuel pump and a ground side. If the voltage value detected by the fuel pump driving voltage detection unit is larger than the upper limit or lower than the lower limit of the normal range, the warning lamp of the meter flashes and a buzzer makes an alarm sound. The abnormality detection circuit is housed in the fuel pump module disposed in the fuel tank. | 04-16-2009 |
20090178475 | ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP TESTING METHOD AND APPARATUS - A system and method for testing the operation of fuel pump is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pressure measurement portion, a flow measurement portion, an electrical diagnostic portion, and a fault simulation portion, where a user can simulate a number of potential fuel system failures to determine the diagnostics of the fuel system. The method includes the steps of measuring an electrical value related to said fuel pump, measuring a pressure related to said fuel pump, measuring a fuel flow related to said fuel pump, simulating a fuel system failure condition, and determining an operating status of said fuel pump. | 07-16-2009 |
20090205413 | DIAGNOSTIC APPARATUS FOR HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM - A diagnostic apparatus is combined with a high-pressure fuel supply system including a high-pressure fuel pump, a fuel rail, injectors, and a fuel pressure measuring unit for measuring fuel pressure in the fuel rail. The diagnostic apparatus is capable of detecting troubles in the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors and of discriminating between a trouble in the high-pressure fuel pump and a trouble in the injectors includes. The diagnostic apparatus includes: a pump discharge component calculating unit | 08-20-2009 |
20100269575 | DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR VARIABLE LIFT MECHANISMS OF ENGINE SYSTEMS HAVING A CAMSHAFT DRIVEN FUEL PUMP - A lift mechanism diagnostic system comprises a fuel pump disabling module, a pressure module, and a diagnostic module. The fuel pump disabling module selectively disables a fuel pump that is driven by a camshaft. The pressure module determines a first pressure of fluid provided to a variable valve lift mechanism when the variable valve lift mechanism is operated in a first lift mode while the fuel pump is disabled and determines a second pressure of the fluid when the variable valve lift mechanism is operated in a second lift mode while the fuel pump is disabled. The diagnostic module selectively diagnoses a fault in the variable valve lift mechanism based on the first and second pressures. | 10-28-2010 |
