20080254900Axial lash control for a vane-type cam phaser - A camshaft phaser for varying the timing of valves in an internal combustion engine. A rotor includes a plurality of vanes disposed in a stator having a plurality of lobes, forming a plurality of alternating timing advance and timing retard chambers. Pressurized oil is supplied selectively to the chambers to change the phase angle of the camshaft with respect to the crankshaft. The rotor is captured between a stator plate and a rotor cover plate. Axial surfaces of the rotor form wiping surfaces with their respective plates. The rotor is divided equatorially into two interlocking sections, the lower section riding on the stator plate and the upper section riding on the cover plate. An axially slidable labyrintian seal formed at the juncture of the upper and lower sections prevents oil leakage. A lash spring between the upper and lower sections urges the sections into zero-lash with their respective plates.10-16-2008
20090069097Cam phaser having pre-loaded spring for biasing the rotor through only a portion of its range of authority - During assembly of an improved phaser, a rotor bias spring is captured by a spring retainer that is fitted or formed into the cover, allowing the spring to be installed in a pre-load position and forming a sub-assembly that is then attached to the remaining components. Grounded and active spring tangs are captured in separate slots in the spring retainer. A pocket within the rotor receives the active tang of the bias spring. The pocket has a tapered bottom ramp that lifts the active tang from the slot wall in the retainer and positions the active tang within the pocket in a retarding direction. Lifting the active tang of the bias spring prevents friction between the spring and the retainer slot wall as would occur as the rotor moves in a retarded direction. In advancing, spring rotation stops when the active tang contacts the end of the retainer slot.03-12-2009

Steel threaded inserts add the required strength to the stator bolt threads to enable a shorter thread engagement, which in turn enables a thinner aluminum front cover plate that may be packaged in tight applications where prior art aluminum front covers cannot be used due to their larger thickness. The steel threaded inserts not only provide a higher stiffness but also have a flanged shape that effectively spreads the clamp load generated during the tightening of the stator bolts further out preventing local clamp load points and, consequently, reducing cover deflection over the span of the front cover plate.01-15-2009
