Coupled oxidation of the hypoxanthine to uric acid and hydrogen peroxide is optionally affected using purified or recombinant xanthine oxidase, wherein the methyltransferase activity is rate-limiting, and wherein determining the methyltransferase activity comprises monitoring of the coupled oxidation reaction.
