TELEMEDICINE SYSTEMS AND METHODS - Methods and systems for telemedicine are provided. A method for operating a telemedicine base unit includes initiating a remote connection with a remote care site. The remote care site may be selected from a plurality of remote care sites based on an attached medical device. The telemedicine base unit transmits the output from the attached medical device to the remote care site. Medical device operating instructions and other information are received from the remote care site. The medical device operation instructions provide guidance for operating the attached medical device. | 07-21-2011
CHANNEL LARYNGOSCOPES AND SYSTEMS - Video-based laryngoscopes having an external centrally located channel coursing from the handle to a curved blade configured to deliver an ETT to a trachea as visualized by a non-removable, or alternatively, a removable video camera and lighting unit located beneath the external channel. The channel laryngoscope may be made for single use in a patient and discarded, or be processed for re-use. Alternatively, the channel laryngoscope may have a removable video camera and lighting member located within an internal chamber that runs parallel with the external channel. In another embodiment a laryngoscope adapter may be detachably affixable to the channel laryngoscope equipped with the non-removable camera to provide a decontaminated or sterile surface to permit re-use of the channel laryngoscope without having to undergo washing or decontamination procedures. | 07-21-2011
BLOOD VESSEL ACCESS DEVICES, SYSTEMS, AND METHODS - A device having a needle injector pivotally attached to an ultrasound transceiver is operated to place a sterilizable needle or needle/cannula unit within a blood vessel by a single user-device operator in which the blood vessel is made visible in a monitor image by ultrasound insonification. A guidance template is overlapped on at least one of a transverse, longitudinal, or three-dimensionally imaged blood vessel that illustrates a predicted path of the needle when it undergoes movement implemented by a controller. In alternate embodiments the needle injector, ultrasound transceiver, and needle or needle/cannula unit may be contained within a flexible sheath that is capable of being sterilized. | 07-07-2011
SEMI-RIGID STYLET FOR ADVANCEMENT OF DOUBLE LUMEN ENDOTRACHEAL VENTILATING TUBES - Semi-rigid stylets configured with a particular curve shaped and handle design to accurately advance either left-sided or right-sided double lumen endotracheal tubes to be positioned in the appropriate place are described. The semi-rigid stylets have a distal bend to counter or compensate for the inherent curvature of double lumen tubes imparted by the memory of spooled tubing stocks. Other embodiments of the semi-rigid stylets are made of materials that establish only those forces sufficient to cause the necessary bending to route a bronchial cuff to a desired lung location without causing substantial tissue injury. The semi-rigid stylets are also fitted with a curved handle configured to engage a user's thumb for easy manipulation and includes a locking component to engage a nearby tracheal tube extension to stabilize endotracheal tube shapes for insertion into the trachea and bronchial regions. | 02-03-2011
SYSTEM AND METHOD TO IDENTIFY AND MEASURE ORGAN WALL BOUNDARIES - Systems and methods are described for acquiring, processing, and presenting boundaries of a cavity-tissue interface within a region-of-interest in an ultrasound image based upon the strength of signals of ultrasound echoes returning from structures within the region-of-interest. The segmentation of boundaries of cavity shapes occupying the region-of-interest utilizes cost function analysis of pixel sets occupying the cavity-tissue interface. The segmented shapes are further image processed to determine areas and volumes of the organ or structure containing the cavity within the region-of-interest. | 01-06-2011
VIDEO LARYNGOSCOPE SYSTEM AND DEVICES - An embodiment encompassing reusable video laryngoscopes that are insertable into transparent or non-transparent disposable sheaths having clear optically clear viewing windows that receive contact with camera lens. The reusable video laryngoscopes are configured to be detachably secured by locking tabs located in the transparent or non-transparent disposable sheaths with complementary shaped posts and ledges of the video laryngoscopes. The video laryngoscopes that are secured into the transparent or non-transparent disposable sheaths may be inserted into the patient's mouth to provide clear camera viewing through the optically clear window ports of the transparent or non-transparent disposable sheaths to allow endotracheal procedures to be undertaken. The transparent or non-transparent disposable sheaths are sterilizable and may be used just once for a given patient. The video laryngoscopes in the form of a baton are detachably removeable from the disposable sheath exposed to a patient. | 10-14-2010
INSTANTANEOUS ULTRASONIC ECHO MEASUREMENT OF BLADDER VOLUME WITH A LIMITED NUMBER OF ULTRASOUND BEAMS - An apparatus and methods to quantify the volume of urine in a human bladder with a limited number of acoustic beams is disclosed. In a first version a plurality of narrow ultrasound beams is transmitted in different directions towards the bladder. Returning echoes are converted to digital form and stored in memory. A volume display on the apparatus allows to define the optimal apposition of the transducer assembly. Signal processing software automatically determines the bladder Depth D and Height H and computes the volume of urine. In a second version, a single wide angle ultrasound beam transducer transmits ultrasounds signals at a fundamental frequency to quantify the urine volume. Return signals originating from a depth beyond the usual position of the posterior wall depth of a filled bladder are analyzed for presence of higher harmonic signals, which in turn are related to the presence or absence of urine. | 08-05-2010
