A particulate refractory material is packed beneath the base wall and around the side walls of the crucible, and a gas diffuser is positioned beneath the crucible. A solid sintered porous barrier is formed within the opening in the base wall of the crucible and between the gas diffuser and the interior cavity of the crucible.
