The stent includes at least one length of wire having a series of turns forming a spring-like stent. The one-piece multi-leaflet valve is attached to the stent and includes a cylinder of polyester material secured thereto at three points. The stent is collapsible in a radial direction between a contracted state and an expanded state. The contracted state has a radial dimension smaller than a radial dimension of the expanded state. The stent is spring biased toward the expanded state such that it occupies an active state when implanted into a heart. The active state has a radial dimension that is between the radial dimension of the contracted state and the radial dimension of the expanded state such that a radial load generated by the bias of the collapsible stent is sufficient to retain the heart valve prosthesis in the heart.12-01-2011

20100101956NANOSCALE DNA DETECTION SYSTEM USING SPECIES-SPECIFIC AND/OR DISEASE- SPECIFIC PROBES FOR RAPID IDENTIFICATION - A method and system for detecting a DNA strand using carbon nanotubes or nanowires. A specific single strand of template DNA serves as a probe for its complementary strand in a solution containing DNA segments to be tested. The single-stranded sequence-specific DNA probe segment, whose ends are modified with amine, is attached between two carbon nanotubes/nanowires. When complementary strands representing DNA segments under test are brought near the probe strands, a dielectrophoresis (DEP) field may enhance the probability of selective hybridization between the complimentary target DNA and probe DNA. A change in electrical conductance in the probe strand occurs upon hybridization of the complementary target DNA with the single probe strand. This conductance change may be measured using the two carbon nanotubes or nano-dimensional electrodes. By exploiting nano-dimensional electrodes and single strand probe DNA, the proposed system is capable of accurately detecting a single molecule of DNA.04-29-2010

20090309016Method and apparatus for Detecting Explosives - An interface that couples SPME to IMS has been constructed and evaluated for the detection of the following detection taggants: 2-nitrotoluene (2-NT), 4-nitrotoluene (4-NT), and 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane (DMNB). The interface was also evaluated for the following common explosives: smokeless powder (nitrocellulose, NC), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), 2,6-dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (2,4,6-TNT), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine (RDX), and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN). The resultant SPME-IMS interface was found to extract volatile constituent chemicals and detection taggants in explosives from a headspace for subsequent detection in a simple, rapid, sensitive, and inexpensive manner.12-17-2009

20090112309Collapsible Heart Valve with Polymer Leaflets - A Catheter Based Heart Valve (CBHV) is described herein which replaces a non functional, natural heart valve. The CBHV significantly reduces the invasiveness of the implantation procedure by being inserted with a catheter as opposed to open heart surgery. Additionally, the CBHV is coated with a biocompatible material to reduce the thrombogenic effects and to increase durability of the CBHV. The CBHV includes a stent and two or more polymer leaflets sewn to the stent. The stent is a wire assembly coated with Polystyrene-Polyisobutylene-Polystyrene (SIBS). The leaflets are made from a polyester weave as a core material and are coated with SIBS before being sewn to the stent. 20090084201METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR EXTRACTION, DETECTION, AND CHARACTERIZATION OF VAPORS FROM EXPLOSIVES, TAGGANTS IN EXPLOSIVES, CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES, AND BIOHAZARDS - An improved method of extraction, detection, and characterization of a vapor from an explosive, a taggant in an explosive, a controlled substance, a biohazard, and mixtures thereof uses a new and improved SPME device for extraction and ion mobility spectrometry for detection and characterization. The new and improved SPME device has an increased capacity to sorb a target vapor. The increased sorption of vapor provides for more accurate detection by an ion mobility spectrometer. A SPME device having increased surface area may be exposed to an atmosphere in an enclosure containing a test object or a volume of gas that was in contact with the test object to allow for sorption of the target vapor and then introduced into an IMS for more accurate detection and characterization of the vapor due to the increased sorption of the vapor by the SPME device described herein.04-02-2009
20080295783Controlled Odor Mimic Permeation System - The primary aspect of the Controlled Odor Mimic Permeation System (COMPS) is that it provides a field deployable instant and reproducible source of known amounts of target odors. This technology consists of a permeable polymer container (chosen to suit target odor and release rate required), stored inside a non-permeable package. The design allows for the pre-equilibration of the target odors such that the outer surface of the inner package can saturate with odor during storage. Removal of the inner item then provides an instant and reproducible source of known target vapor flux. We have successfully demonstrated this technology by placing the target odor chemicals within permeable membranes such as low density polyethylene which are then sealed within a non-permeable membranes such as metallized polyester. This design has multiple advantages including preventing cross contamination when storing multiple odor targets (5-10 targets are commonly employed) as well as being light-weight disposable, low unit cost potential, no external power/operating unit/machinery/hardware, simple to use and providing a known reproducible concentration of the target odors to the detector in the field. The applications of these COMPS include the whole range of biological (e.g. detector dog) and electronic (e.g. field sensors) detectors with examples such as explosives (e.g. 2-ethyl-1-hexanol simulating plasticized explosives), drugs (e.g. 3,4-methylenedioxybenzaldehyde simulating ecstasy), human remains (including dimethyl disulfide and pentanoic acid) and live human scent (including 5-heptene-2-one and nonanol).12-04-2008
