20120000726SOLID-STATE ACOUSTIC METAMATERIAL AND METHOD OF USING SAME TO FOCUS SOUND - A phonemic crystal is made of a first solid medium having a first density and a substantially periodic array of structures disposed in the first medium, the structures being made of a second solid medium having a second density different from the first density. The first medium has a speed of propagation of longitudinal sound waves and a speed of propagation of transverse sound waves, the speed of propagation of longitudinal sound waves being approximately that of a fluid, and the speed of the propagation of transverse sound waves being smaller than the speed of propagation of longitudinal sound waves.01-05-2012
20110292335DIFFRACTIVE TRIFOCAL LENS - A diffractive multifocal lens is disclosed, comprising an optical element having at least one diffractive surface, the surface profile comprising a plurality of annular concentric zones. The optical thickness of the surface profile changes monotonically with radius within each zone, while a distinct step in optical thickness at the junction between adjacent zones defines a step height. The step heights for respective zones may differ from one zone to another periodically so as to tailor diffraction order efficiencies of the optical element. In one example of a trifocal lens, step heights alternate between two values, the even-numbered step heights being lower than the odd-numbered step heights. By plotting a topographical representation of the diffraction efficiencies resulting from such a surface profile, step heights may be optimized to direct a desired level of light power into the diffraction orders corresponding to near, intermediate, and distance vision, thereby optimizing the performance of the multifocal lens.12-01-2011
20110245175INHIBITING INTERACTION BETWEEN THE HIF-1ALPHA AND p300/CBP WITH HYDROGEN BOND SURROGATE-BASED - The present invention relates to peptides having one or more stable, internally constrained α-helices, and that include a sequence that mimics at least a portion of the C-terminal transactivation domain of HIF-1α. Also disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions containing these peptides and methods of using these peptides, for example to reduce gene transcription, treat or prevent disorders mediated by interaction of HIF-1α with CREB-binding protein and/or p300, reduce or prevent angiogenesis in a tissue, induce apoptosis, decrease cell survival and/or proliferation, and identify potential ligands of CREB-binding protein and/or p300.10-06-2011
20110236181VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE - A vertical axis wind turbine comprises upper and lower rotor blades and upper and lower bearing assemblies. Horizontal members connect the upper rotor blades to the upper bearing assembly and the lower blades connect the upper rotor blades to the lower bearing assembly. The upper rotor blades can be arranged vertically or non-vertically. In non-vertical arrangements, the upper rotor blades can be twisted or swept back in a straight manner. The turbine can be self-supporting with a need for a continuous vertical axis connecting the bearing assemblies. Sweeping jet actuators are incorporated into the rotor blades to deliver oscillating air jets to surfaces of the rotor blades to delay occurrence of dynamic stall. Conduits in the blades can deliver pressurized flow of air to the actuators. The turbine can be supported by a structure that can exerts only horizontal and/or lifting forces on the rotor blade assembly to reduce the load on the lower bearing.09-29-2011
20110199658System and method for synchronizing a spatial light modulator with a pulsed laser to record a hologram at the repetition rate of the pulsed laser - A system and method that synchronizes a spatial light modulator (SLM) with a pulsed laser to record a hologram at the repetition rate of the pulsed laser for applications including holographic displays and data storage. The color channel capability of a SLM is utilized to effectively increase the write throughput when the pulsed laser repetition rate LR exceeds the SLM's image refresh rate R. The hogels are encoded on the color channels and concatenated to form a sequence of color images such that the write throughput is equal to the repetition rate LR up to a maximum of N*R. The invention effectively extends the capability and continued viability of existing inexpensive SLMs.08-18-2011
20110134944EFFICIENT PULSE LASER LIGHT GENERATION AND DEVICES USING THE SAME - A time delay is introduced in the optical path of the light pulse at fundamental wavelength relative to that for the fourth harmonic light pulse in a set up for generating the 506-09-2011
20110101938ADAPTIVE-GAIN STEP-UP/DOWN SWITCHED-CAPACITOR DC/DC CONVERTERS - A switched-capacitor DC-DC converter has a reconfigurable power stage with variable gain ratio and/or interleaving regulation for low ripple voltage, fast load transient operation, variable output voltage and high efficiency. Since the power stage has multiple switches per capacitor, the converter exploits reconfigurable characteristics of the power stage for fast dynamic control and adaptive pulse control for tight and efficient voltage regulation.05-05-2011
20100249235ADMINISTRATION OF 3,5-DIIODOTHYROPROPIONIC ACID FOR STIMULATING WEIGHT LOSS, AND/OR LOWERING TRIGLYCERIDE LEVELS, AND/OR TREATMENT OF METABOLIC SYNDROME - The invention provides methods and compositions for stimulating weight loss or lowering triglyceride levels in an individual in need thereof. In methods of the invention, a pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of DITPA, and optionally one or a plurality of lipid lowering agents, is administered to an individual to stimulate weight loss, lower triglyceride and/or lipoprotein levels, and/or to treat one or more symptoms of metabolic syndrome.09-30-2010
