20120071736Medical Device With a Fitting Having A Gas Venting Position - A blood parameter measurement cassette or other device is configured to control incidental liquid discharged during the device's calibration process. The cassette includes optical sensors which are chemically responsive to blood constituents and require calibration with a blood parameter monitoring device prior to use in a medical procedure. During the calibration process, an incidental amount of a liquid may be expelled from the cassette. The present invention is directed towards controlling the expelled liquid by absorbing it using an absorbent material disposed on the exterior of the cassette's main body. The absorbent material thereby prevents the liquid from causing detrimental effects to the monitoring and calibration equipment used in conjunction with the cassette. The scope includes additional embodiments wherein the inventive concept is applied to other fluid-handling medical devices that require venting of gases.03-22-2012
20120035606Body Tissue Incision Apparatus - The body tissue harvesting instrument is provided with a cutter which is disposed at the distal end of an insertion member that is inserted into the body to sever tissue inside the body. The cutter includes a slit that extends from the distal end toward the base end; a first high-frequency electrode disposed along the two side edges of the slit on the outer surface of the cutter body and a second high-frequency electrode disposed at the base end of the slit; and a mechanism which is disposed on both sides of the distal end of the slit in the projection of the cutter body which rotates as a result of being pressed by the tissue, and which feeds the tissue toward the interior of the slit. Parts located on both sides of the distal end of the slit in the projection may mutually separate in the thickness direction.02-09-2012
20100292533Endoscopic Cutter with Reconfigurable Guides - A bipolar cutter has a cutter main body for inserting into the interior of a body and a treating electrode that is positioned against an object of examination (such as a blood vessel or a bleeding site) to be electrically cut and cauterized. A guiding member guides the object of examination toward the treating electrode as it is displaced in the axial direction of the cutter main body. The guiding member is comprised of a pair of protruding members and a notched groove or gap that leads to the treating electrode while in a first configuration. A gap adjusting mechanism causes the guiding member or the treating electrode to be displaced in the axial direction to reduce or eliminate the length of the gap so that the treating electrode can better reach flat tissue surfaces for treatment.11-18-2010
20100292532Endoscopic Vessel Dissector With Side Entry - A blunt dissector for endoscopic vein harvesting has a generally-cylindrical sheath for retaining an elongated endoscope. The sheath is elongated between a distal end and a proximal end. A transparent tip is disposed at the distal end of the sheath. A handle is disposed at the proximal end of the sheath. The sheath includes a selectably closable longitudinal slot having an opened configuration such that the endoscope can be inserted radially into the sheath. The longitudinal slot has a closed configuration that retains the endoscope within the sheath and presents a substantially smooth outer surface for use during dissection.11-18-2010
20090306699Blunt Dissector for Separating Blood Vessels from Surrounding Tissue - A blunt dissector for separating a blood vessel from surrounding tissues in a body comprises a longitudinal rod having a proximal end, a distal end, and an internal passage for conducting insufflation gas between the proximal and distal ends. An interior sleeve is mounted within the longitudinal rod for receiving an endoscope at the proximal end. A transparent tip is mounted to the distal end of the longitudinal rod. A handle is mounted to the proximal end of the longitudinal rod. The longitudinal rod has an outer surface along substantially all of the longitudinal rod between the proximal and distal ends consisting essentially of a fluoropolymer.12-10-2009
20090306541Body Tissue Incision Apparatus - The body tissue harvesting instrument is provided with a cutter which is disposed at the distal end of an insertion member that is inserted into the body of an organism, and which severs tissue inside the body. The cutter includes: a cutter body which projects from the distal end, and which includes a slit that extends from the distal end toward the base end; a first high-frequency electrode disposed along the two side edges of the slit on the outer surface of the cutter body and a second high-frequency electrode disposed at the base end of the slit; and a mechanism which is disposed on both sides of the distal end of the slit in the projection of the cutter body, which rotates as a result of being pressed by the tissue, and which feeds the tissue toward the interior of the slit. In addition, the parts located on both sides of the distal end of the slit in the projection mutually separate in the thickness direction of the slit. Moreover, the second electrode is capable of moving between the base end and distal end of the slit in the cutter body; and the width of the distal end of the slit is set larger than the width of the base end. It is possible to provide a holder—which holds the tissue so that it is able to freely move along it—at the distal end of the insertion member, and the holder includes a tissue holding frame which has two arms which extend in the width direction of the slit at both the distal end part and proximal end part relative to the distal end, and which face each other in the extension direction of the slit. The two arms mutually diverge in the thickness direction.12-10-2009
20090270816Even-Flow Multi-Stage Cannula - A single-lumen, multi-stage cannula particularly adapted for venous drainage during cardiac surgery includes a first stage comprising a longitudinal tubular tip having a first plurality of fenestrations to provide an axial flow at a proximal end of the tip. A second stage coaxial with the first stage comprises a nozzle section having an outer lumen wall and an inner annular wall. A central passage disposed within the inner annular wall continues the axial flow from the first stage. A plurality of outer passages is disposed between the outer lumen wall and the inner annular wall so that the inner annular wall isolates the central passage from the outer passages. The outer lumen wall includes a plurality of second fenestrations, wherein each second fenestration supplies fluid from a second region outside the cannula to a respective outer passage. The outer passages have respective outlets arranged to provide an injected flow substantially parallel to the axial flow. At least an initial portion of the central lumen of a proximal tube has an inside diameter greater than a diameter of the central passage. The central lumen continues the axial flow and receives the injected flow annularly injected around and substantially parallel with the axial flow.10-29-2009
20090112053Blood Vessel Preparation and Preservation Kit - A vessel preparation and preservation kit supports a blood vessel during processing for use in bypass graft surgery. The device comprises a clamshell base having first and second trays latchable in a closed condition and pivotable to an open condition. The first tray has a series of open slots on an interior surface, wherein each slot extends substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis of the clamshell base. A first fixture has a first plate positionable in any selected one of the slots, a first fitting for holding a first end of the blood vessel, and a fluid supply needle for inserting into the first end of the blood vessel. A second fixture has a second plate positionable in any selected one of the slots a predetermined distance from the first fixture and having a second fitting for holding a second end of the blood vessel. A liquid-retaining foam is mounted in the second tray to immerse the prepared blood vessel in liquid to preserve it by putting the trays in the closed condition.04-30-2009
20090041595Extracorporeal Blood Pump with Disposable Pump Head Portion Having Magnetically Levitated Impeller - A pump drive unit has an openable housing that accommodates a disposable impeller unit which is pre-connected with tubing, while maintaining the tight tolerances and close spacing. A levitation system (magnets and sensors), drive motor and drive magnets, and control electronics are all re-usable and housed within relatively permanent structures. In one embodiment, a hinged top separates the levitating magnets to allow the impeller unit to be captured and retained with positional accuracy and in close proximity to the desired locations when the hinged top is closed. The top may be separated into sections covering unequal arcs to coincide with the organization of the magnetic subcomponents in the upper drive unit housing.02-12-2009
