20110110975INACTIVATED VIRUS COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS OF PREPARING SUCH COMPOSITIONS - The present invention is a composition comprising a live virus having an infectious component and a plurality of surface antigens in contact with a formaldehyde donor agent having a molecular weight that is less than about 400 g/mol. The present invention further provides a method for deactivating a live virus having an infectious component and a plurality of surface antigens, comprising the steps of: a) providing a live virus having an infectious component and a plurality of surface antigens; and b) contacting the virus with a formaldehyde donor agent having a molecular weight that is greater than about 50 g/mol and less than about 400 g/mol for a period of time (e.g., at least about 12 hours) sufficient for de-activating the infectious component with the formaldehyde donor agent and for preserving at least a portion of the surface antigens to form a deactivated virus. In another embodiment the invention is a method of preparing a composition useful as a vaccine comprising the abovementioned steps in combination with the step of c) mixing a non-toxic effective amount, for inducing an immune response in a subject to which the vaccine is administered, of the deactivated virus with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
