20100049227 | Delivery Tools for Sleep Disorders Treatment Implant and Methods of Implantation - Methods and tools are disclosed for inserting an implant device that treats snoring and apnea of a patient by altering the position of a soft palate. Methods and tools can make an incision in patient's soft and hard palate to create a cavity that can house the implant. The tools can have visually observable markings that can be aligned with the incision, thus controlling the depth of the cavity. A needle having an incision edge can be used to make an incision in patient's soft palate. The needle can be bent into a suitable longitudinal shape to allow easier access and visualization of the process. A blade that makes the cavity in the tissue can be housed inside a channel in the needle. The tools may have stoppers to prevent excessive extension and retraction of the blade thus preventing an excessive cavity depth. Some tools may also house the implant device, which may be implanted after the cavity is formed. | 02-25-2010 |
20100004659 | Cavitation Depth, Perforation Confirmation and Implant Delivery Tool - Methods and tools that insert implants for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea in a cavity created in the patient's tissue are disclosed. Some tools and methods can additionally verify that the cavity has proper cavitation depth and does not have unwanted perforations. The tools include: a sheath having a substantially flat portion for housing an implant, the sheath having a distal end and a proximal end, the sheath having a hollow collar on the proximal end, an insertion depth mark near the distal end, and a slit on the distal end, the slit being in fluid communication with the hollow collar; a substantially rigid pusher configured to be disposed within and in slidable engagement with the sheath, the pusher having a distal end and a proximal end, the pusher having a rigid body having an outside diameter for slidably engaging with the hollow collar of the sheath, a tip on the distal end for engaging a proximal end of an implant, and a lumen extending from said proximal side to said distal side of said rigid body, the lumen configured for fluid communication with a syringe at the proximal end and in fluid communication with the sheath at the distal end. | 01-07-2010 |
20090173352 | ON-OFF IMPLANT FOR SUPPORTING THE AIRWAY - The present invention provides an airway implant device having an electroactive polymer element, including: a composite layer having a polymer substrate and a biocompatible conductive material, wherein the composite layer also can be opposing surfaces; and a conductive polymer layer disposed on at least one of the opposing surfaces of the composite layer, wherein the implant device is adapted and configured to modulate an opening of an air passageway. Some embodiments include a housing designed to conform to the shape of the palate. Some embodiments include an attachment element to secure the device to tissue. Methods of treating airway disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring with the airway implant device are disclosed herein. | 07-09-2009 |
20090165803 | ON-OFF IMPLANT FOR SUPPORTING THE TONGUE - The present invention provides an implant for stabilizing the tongue, including: a first anchoring portion for securing a first end of the implant with the mandibula; a control portion connected with the anchoring portion, configured for selectively activating the implant; a flexible portion connected at its proximal end with the control portion, the flexible portion having three-dimensional flexibility in a non-energized state and the flexible portion having a lesser three-dimensional flexibility in a energized state, the flexible portion being selectively switchable between the non-energized and energized states by the control portion, wherein the flexible portion can be an electroactive polymer element having: a composite layer having a polymer substrate and a biocompatible conductive material, wherein the composite layer also can be opposing surfaces; and a conductive polymer layer disposed on at least one of the opposing surfaces of the composite layer; and a second anchoring portion connected with the flexible portion, the second anchoring portion being configured for connecting the implant with the base of the tongue. Some embodiments include a housing designed to conform to the shape of the palate. Some embodiments include an attachment element to secure the device to tissue. Methods of treating airway disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring with the airway implant device are disclosed herein. | 07-02-2009 |
