Solution processed thin films and laminates, devices comprising such thin films and laminates, and method for their use and manufacture - Devices having a thin film or laminate structure comprising hafnium and/or zirconium oxy hydroxy compounds, and methods for making such devices, are disclosed. The hafnium and zirconium compounds can be doped, typically with other metals, such as lanthanum. Examples of electronic devices or components that can be made include, without limitation, insulators, transistors and capacitors. A method for patterning a device using the materials as positive or negative resists or as functional device components also is described. For example, a master plate for imprint lithography can be made. An embodiment of a method for making a device having a corrosion barrier also is described. Embodiments of an optical device comprising an optical substrate and coating also are described. Embodiments of a physical ruler also are disclosed, such as for accurately measuring dimensions using an electron microscope. | 05-17-2012
METHOD TO TRIGGER RNA INTERFERENCE - A method to generate siRNAs in vivo is described, as are constructs and compositions useful in the method. The method does not depend on the use of DNA or synthetic constructs that contain inverted duplications or dual promoters so as to form perfect or largely double-stranded RNA. Rather, the method depends on constructs that yield single-stranded RNA transcripts, and exploits endogenous or in vivo-produced miRNAs or siRNAs to initiate production of siRNAs. The miRNAs or siRNAs guide cleavage of the transcript and set the register for production of siRNAs (usually 21 nucleotides in length) encoded adjacent to the initiation cleavage site within the construct. The method results in specific formation of siRNAs of predictable size and register (phase) relative to the initiation cleavage site. The method can be used to produce specific siRNAs in vivo for inactivation or suppression of one or more target genes or other entities, such as pathogens. | 12-22-2011
RHAMNOLIPID BIOSURFACTANT FROM PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA STRAIN NY3 AND METHODS OF USE - The present disclosure relates to an isolated strain of | 12-15-2011
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ENHANCED HEAT TRANSFER USING NANOPOROUS TEXTURED SURFACES - A system and method for performing heat dissipation is disclosed that includes contacting a heat transfer liquid with a heat exchange surface having raised hydrophilic nanoporous nanostructures disposed adjacent a central core upon a substrate. The heat transfer liquid forms a preselected contact angle when placed on the heat exchange surface. The raised nanoporous nanostructures define channels, interconnected pathways, and voids within the nanoporous nanostructures. The nanoporous nanostructures have additional surface irregularities upon the nanostructures themselves. The nanostructures are preferably formed by depositing metal oxides or other materials upon a substrate using a Microreactor Assisted Nanomaterial Deposition (MAND) process. | 08-25-2011
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CHEMICAL DEPOSITION - Embodiments of the present system and method are useful for chemical deposition, particularly continuous deposition of thin films. Disclosed systems typically comprise a micromixer and a microchannel applicator. A deposition material or materials is applied to a substrate, such as an oxidized silicon substrate, a flexible substrate useful for forming flexible devices, such as flexible transistors, and combinations of different substrates. Uniform and highly oriented surface morphologies of films deposited using disclosed embodiments are clearly improved compared to films deposited by a conventional batch process. The process can be used to tailor the composition and morphology of the material deposited on a substrate. The present process can be used at low temperatures as a post-deposition, high-temperature annealing step is obviated. | 05-26-2011

METHODS OF PRODUCING VALIDAMYCIN A ANALOGS AND USES THEREOF - This disclosure relates to validamycin A biosynthesis and in particular, to methods of producing validamycin A analogs and uses thereof. In a particular example, a method for making a validamycin A analog includes transforming a host cell with one or more recombinant DNA vectors to produce a valN-inactivated mutant; and culturing the valN-inactivated mutant in a culture medium to produce a validamycin A analog, such as 1,1′-bis-valienamine and validienamycin, and their conversion to valienamine. The present disclosure further relates to compositions including such compounds as well as methods of using the compositions, such as for antifungal agents. | 06-17-2010
MAGNETIC HELICAL SCREW DRIVE - A system can comprise a screw and a nut, which are configured to move relative to each other. Each of the screw and the nut components can comprise one or more magnets configured to exert a repulsive force on one or more magnets of the other component as a result of the relative motion. Interactions between the one or more magnets of the screw and the one or more magnets of the nut can allow for conversion between linear motion and rotary motion. One or more tools can be used to aid in manufacturing the screw and/or the nut. In some embodiments additional components can aid in maintaining alignment of the screw and the nut. | 10-08-2009
