20100280765 | SENSING USING POLARIZATION DIVERSITY AND WAVELENGTH DEPENDENT BACKSCATTER - Provided herein are systems and methods capable of detecting and discriminating and/or classifying hazardous biological agents or other hazardous agents. In one aspect, a system measures electromagnetic energy scattered by a material at the different polarizations states and wavelengths. The system then combines the measured electromagnetic wavelengths at the different polarization states and wavelengths into different combinations to produce input parameters for a classifier. The input parameters include both depolarization and wavelength-dependent back scattering measurements of the material illuminated by transmitted electromagnetic energy. The depolarization measurement provides information on the shape and absorption features of the material and the wavelength-dependent information provides information on the shape and index of refraction of the material. The combined measurements provided in the input parameters increases the information available to the classifier to classify materials, enabling the classifier to classify a wider range of materials. | 11-04-2010 |
20090219960 | PHASE AND POLARIZATION CONTROLLED BEAM COMBINING DEVICES AND METHODS - A controller, such as a programmable logic controller, may manipulate a phase and/or polarization module to alter and/or control the phase and polarization of input beams. Utilizing active phase and polarization control can enable the combination of any arbitrary number of input beams into a single, combined beam. Utilizing active phase and polarization control can also enable the combination of input beams having arbitrary power levels. | 09-03-2009 |
20090199389 | LOW STRESS OPTICS MOUNT USING THERMALLY CONDUCTIVE LIQUID METAL OR GEL - An optical assembly with mounting provided to effectively transfer heat away from an optic, such as a slab or waveguide amplifier or laser disk, while limiting internal stresses. The assembly includes an optic with a planar surface. A heat sink is positioned in the assembly with an upper surface next to the planar surface of the optic. The upper surface of the heat sink comprises a recessed surface defining a reservoir for containing a compliant heat transfer material. The assembly may further include a volume of the heat transfer material, such as a liquid metal or thermally conductive gel, in the reservoir of the heat sink. In one embodiment, the optic is a slab amplifier with a reflective coating or layer that directly contacts the heat transfer material in the heat sink reservoir or a foil or membrane is provided between the heat transfer material and the slab. | 08-13-2009 |
