In one embodiment, the implant device includes a porous layer, an intermediate layer, and a solid substrate. The porous layer is preferably bonded to the intermediate layer by cold isostatic pressing. The intermediate layer is preferably bonded by vacuum welding to the solid substrate such that the porous layer forms at least a portion of the outer surface of the orthopaedic implant device. Preferably, a diffusion bond is created between the bonded intermediate layer and the solid substrate by hot isostatic pressing. In another embodiment, a porous layer is created on an outer surface of a solid layer by selective melting. From the obtained image data an insertional vector for implanting an acetabular implant or component into an acetabulum of the patient is determined, wherein the insertional vector is coaxial with a polar axis of the acetabular component. Also from the obtained image data, a superior surface of the guides and implants can be shaped to match the acetabulum of the patient. A nub portion extending outwardly from the superior surface of the guides and implants is shaped to substantially match the shape of a fovea of the acetabulum. The polyethylene may be irradiated with gamma ray or e-beam radiation to form free radicals and then crosslinked to eliminate free radicals prior to exposure to oxygen. The so treated bearing surface of the crosslinked polyethylene is then coated with a photoinitiator. Thereafter the bearing material is photocrosslinked with ultra-violet (UV) radiation. 20110224325POLYETHYLENE CROSS-LINKED WITH AN ANTHOCYANIN - A method for manufacturing of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for implants, where the implants have been machined out of UHMWPE blocks or extruded rods, has anthocyanin dispersely imbedded in the polyethylene. The implant is then exposed to γ ray or electron beam irradiation in an amount of at least 2.5 Mrad followed by a heat treatment to prevent the implant from becoming brittle in the long term as well as to improve strength and wear. The method includes mixing a powder or granulate resin of UHMWPE with an aqueous liquid that contains anthocyanin in a predetermined amount. The water is then evaporated in order to deposit the anthocyanin in a predetermined concentration on the polyethylene particles. The doped UHMWPE particles are compressed into blocks at temperatures in a range of approximately 135° C.-250° C. and pressures in a range of approximately 2-70 MPa. 20080228191Femoral elevator - A bone retractor that may be used as a femoral elevator. The bone retractor includes a clamp for attaching the bone retractor to an operating room bed rail, a post attached to the clamp via a hinged joint, a mount slidably attached to the post and a hook coupled to the mount which in turn is attached to the post. A shaft passes through the interior of the post and attaches to clamp. The clamp has a lower jaw and an upper jaw. An opening is formed in the lower jaw and an end of the shaft is engaged in the opening. The shaft has two sections with a universal joint connecting these two sections. The born retractor is attached to the operating room bed rail by applying clamp to the bed rail. With bone retractor attached to the bed rail, the post is lowered towards the wound. The hook is placed under the bone, and the bone exposed by holding the hook or the post and lifting the bone out of the wound. A knob is tightened to lock the post and consequently the hook in the raised position while the surgeon performs the surgery. When the surgeon is ready, the bone is lowered in the wound by loosening the knob and slowly placing the bone in the desired position in the wound.09-18-2008

The preferred embodiment provides that the femoral head is attached to a fixation prosthesis, which extends coaxially through the canal of the femoral neck, into the femur, and is then attached to the opposite lateral wall of the femur. In this manner, the prosthesis serves to imitate the original structure of the femoral neck.
