20130194846 | UNIVERSAL SINGLE-STAGE POWER CONVERTER - A universal electrical power converter having the combined capabilities of symmetrical and asymmetrical converters, bidirectionality, and simplicity is provided with methods for controlling it in single-stage conversion. In some cases, the converter charges an inductor connected in parallel between a regulated port and an unregulated port using energy stored by a capacitor positioned in parallel between the inductor and one of the ports until the inductor has a level of current stored that corresponds to the change in voltage desired at the regulated port, then discharges stored energy into the other port until a current cutoff threshold level is reached in the inductor. In some embodiments a single stage power converter is provided having three or more ports that can be connected and disconnected from the same inductor. Converters disclosed herein can convert AC signals when there is cross switching on at least one side or branch of the converter. | 08-01-2013 |
20130193928 | CHARGE MANAGEMENT FOR ENERGY STORAGE TEMPERATURE CONTROL - Charging and discharging an energy storage device (ESD) generates heat and may prevent its temperature from dropping to unsafe levels. By monitoring and managing the charge and discharge of an ESD with respect to the periods of time in which demand charges are determined, the heating will have minimal adverse effect on demand charges. ESDs may also exchange energy in a controlled manner for heating purposes and reduce reliance on utility grid-based energy sources. ESD heating may also be made more efficient by offsetting the heating with load shedding during charging periods. Precharging the ESD while heating or preheating the ESD by charging and discharging can prevent new maximum demand levels from appearing and thereby limit increases in demand charges. | 08-01-2013 |
20130147264 | THREE PHASE INVERTER DRIVER - A system and method of use of a three-phase inverter driver is disclosed. In some exemplary embodiments three single-phase inverters are connected to the three-phase AC input of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) so that each of the single-phase inverters provide one of the three phases of the AC signal used by the EVSE. The single-phase inverters are rectified and either have variance in their output frequencies or have their phases staggered so that the maximum voltage provided to the EVSE remains at a consistently high level. In some cases, the three phases each cross polarity simultaneously, resulting in a drop in the maximum three-phase voltage, so low-capacity capacitors are used in conjunction with the inverters to bridge these gaps in voltage. Embodiments use readily available, inexpensive components that have regulatory safety-approval and therefore may allow implementation on a vehicle or with a load leveling energy storage system. | 06-13-2013 |
20120280653 | Electric Vehicle Fleet Management Charging Station Systems and Methods - Charging stations, systems for charging and identifying electric vehicles, and methods for detecting and providing charging information of a vehicle are provided. The charging stations include vehicle detectors, charging connectors, and system controllers to estimate the state of charge of a vehicle based on current measurements from the charging connectors and then to output charge status signals if the state of charge is at or above a predetermined energy level and the vehicle is detected as being properly positioned by the vehicle detectors. These results may be output to indicators, computers, and network connections. Also disclosed are systems where the vehicle has a vehicle information device readable by the vehicle detector to obtain vehicle data that is transmitted to the system controller and other components of the system. Methods of monitoring current, estimating state of charge, and providing a charge status signal if certain conditions are also present. | 11-08-2012 |
20120274145 | Circuit for Rendering Energy Storage Devices Parallelable - A circuit for rendering an energy storage device parallelable comprised of an energy storage device connected to a power adapter that converts the potential of the energy storage device into a potential that follows a predetermined function of the state of charge of the energy storage device. When multiple assemblies are paralleled, they may be charged and discharged as a whole with individual storage devices maintaining equal states of charge. The energy storage devices can be batteries with different cell counts, configurations, and energy discharge profiles. In some cases, the power adapters are comprised of DC to DC converters and system controllers that are used to translate each battery's energy discharge profile into a user-determined energy discharge profile that is a predictable function of the battery's state of charge and independent of temperature or other external conditions. | 11-01-2012 |
20120242148 | ENERGY ALLOCATION FOR ENERGY STORAGE COOPERATION - Systems that allow energy allocation for energy storage cooperation are disclosed, with specific methods outlined concerning allocating energy stored by an energy storage device between a utility provider, a customer, and/or a third party. The methods may include allocating a portion of stored energy for a utility provider's benefit which may be gained as a result of a part of the allocated energy being dispatched into a utility network and allocating another portion of energy stored in the energy storage device for the benefit of the customer. Additional embodiments disclose the dispatching of the energy stored, signals used to bring about a dispatch, the nature of the relationship between the utility provider, the customer, and the energy stored, methods for making energy available to a utility provider without a prearranged reservation of the energy, penalties for misallocating energy, apparatus for allocating energy and causing dispatch, and more. | 09-27-2012 |
