20110152836Method and Apparatus for Arterial and Venous Cannulation - A method and apparatus for cannulating vessels and cavities are provided. Such an apparatus includes a y-adaptor having a front leg configured to hold a needle, a guide-wire leg configured to receive a guide-wire, and a syringe leg configured to hold a syringe for aspiration. Once the needle is inserted into the desired vessel or cavity, the syringe may be aspirated to determine if the insertion was successful. Then, a guide-wire may be pushed into the guide-wire leg and into the needle via the front leg of the apparatus. Once the guide-wire has reached the targeted vessel or cavity, a catheter or cannula may be positioned over the guide wire and advanced to the desired location.06-23-2011
20110086828TREATMENT OF ALCOHOL ABUSE AND ALCOHOLISM USING MODULATORS OF NEUROSTEROID BINDING SITES ON GABAA RECEPTORS - The present invention provides methods for reducing alcohol drinking behavior in humans and treating acute alcohol poisoning through the use of neutral or negative modulating agents of the neurosteroid sites on GABA04-14-2011
20110076330USE OF ADIPOSE TISSUE-DERIVED STROMAL CELLS IN SPINAL FUSION - The present invention encompasses methods and compositions for treating a bone condition. The isolated adipose tissue-derived stromal cell of the invention and products related thereto have a plethora of uses, including but not limited to research, diagnostic, and therapeutic applications such as in spinal fusion procedures.03-31-2011
20100267629Enterostatin as Therapeutic Agent for Hypoglycemia - It has been discovered that enterostatin injections into mice caused an increase in blood glucose levels within 15 minutes of injection, and the glucose levels remained high for up to an hour after injection. In addition, mice injected with enterostatin showed less of an initial decrease in blood glucose following an insulin injection. Enterostatin was also shown to decrease AMPK activity in both mice and human tissues, which is additional support that glucose production is increased after enterostatin injection. This ability to enhance glucose production indicates that enterostatin could be used to treat hypoglycemia.10-21-2010
20100240933Lutein Extraction from Ozone-Treated Plant Sources - The use of ozonation has been discovered to increase the lutein extraction from aflatoxin-free corn and for some batches of alfalfa. In addition, the ozonation will substantially decrease any aflatoxin in the plant source. The structure of lutein as indicated by HPLC elution profile and the function of lutein using an antimutagenic activity was shown not to be affected by the ozonation.09-23-2010
20100168831Implantable clip-on micro-cuff electrode for functional stimulation and bio-potential recording - A nerve cuff electrode with a clip-on design feature is provided for the stimulation of nerves and nerve fibers and the recording of bio-potentials from nerves and nerve fibers. The nerve cuff includes an aperture having a longitudinal slit, a pinch hinge having a first arm and a second arm spaced apart from each other and at least one electrode embedded in the inner circumference of the aperture. The longitudinal slit is configured to open when a compressive force is applied to the outer surfaces of the first arm and the second arm whereby the first and second arm are squeezed together. When the compressive force is removed, the spring tension of the cuff returns the longitudinal slit to its normally closed position.07-01-2010
20100006437DETECTION OF NUCLEIC ACID SEQUENCE DIFFERENCES USING COUPLED LIGASE DETECTION AND POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTIONS - The present invention relates to a method for identifying a target nucleotide sequence. This method involves forming a ligation product on a target nucleotide sequence in a ligase detection reaction mixture, amplifying the ligation product to form an amplified ligation product in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) mixture, detecting the amplified ligation product, and identifying the target nucleotide sequence. Such coupling of the ligase detection reaction and the polymerase chain reaction permits multiplex detection of nucleic acid sequence differences.01-14-2010
20090148546Methods and compounds fo rthe treatment of obesity and obesity-related disorders - In certain embodiments, the invention comprises the use of plant-derived substances to reduce body fat and/or to increase insulin sensitivity in mammals. In certain embodiments, the invention comprises a composition for reducing the amount of fat in the body of a mammal, the composition comprising at least one plant-derived substance which inhibits adipogenesis in the body of the mammal and at least one plant-derived substance which promotes lipolysis in the body of the mammal. In certain embodiments, the invention comprises a composition for reducing the amount of fat in the body of a mammal, the composition comprising at least one plant-derived substance which inhibits adipogenesis in the body of the mammal, at least one plant-derived substance which promotes lipolysis in the body of the mammal, and at least one plant-derived substance which inhibits lipogenesis in the body of the mammal. In certain embodiments, capsaicin may be used in combination with other plant-derived substances to reduce the body fat in a mammalian subject. In one embodiment, an effective amount of a composition comprising capsaicin in combination with grape seed extract and/or genistein and/or caffeine may be administered to a subject to reduce the body fat of the subject. In one embodiment, a composition comprising grape seed extract is administered to a mammalian subject to increase insulin sensitivity.06-11-2009
