20130119316 | Boron nitride and boron nitride nanotube materials for radiation shielding - Effective radiation shielding is required to protect crew and equipment in various fields including aerospace, defense, medicine and power generation. Light elements and in particular hydrogen are most effective at shielding against high-energy particles including galactic cosmic rays, solar energetic particles and fast neutrons. However, pure hydrogen is highly flammable, has a low neutron absorption cross-section, and cannot be made into structural components. Nanocomposites containing the light elements Boron, Nitrogen, Carbon and Hydrogen as well dispersed boron nano-particles, boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and boron nitride nano-platelets, in a matrix, provide effective radiation shielding materials in various functional forms. Boron and nitrogen have large neutron absorption cross-sections and wide absorption spectra. The incorporation of boron and nitrogen containing nanomaterials into hydrogen containing matrices provides composites that can effectively shield against neutrons and a wide range of radiation species of all energies without fragmentation and the generation of harmful secondary particles. | 05-16-2013 |
20130074657 | WRENCH WITH EXPANDING TIP ASSEMBLY - A tool assembly for engaging a head of a fastener. The tool assembly includes an elongated hollow shaft member having a first end and a second end and an actuation rod member moveably disposed within the shaft member. The actuation rod member includes a first end corresponding with the first end of the shaft member and a second end corresponding with the second end of the shaft member and an expandable tip assembly. One end of the expandable tip assembly is movably coupled to the actuation rod. The other end of the expandable tip assembly includes a patterned face. A first contracted state of the expanded tip assembly allows the patterned face to mate with the head of the fastener, and a second expanded state of the expanded tip assembly allows the patterned face to securely engage the head of the fastener. | 03-28-2013 |
20130044385 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IMAGE PLANE EXIT PUPIL CHARACTERIZATION - An aperture mask for image plane exit pupil characterization of an imaging system is disclosed. The aperture mask includes a substantially opaque sheet configured to block portions of a wavefront travelling through an optical path of the imaging system, the sheet includes a plurality of holes, wherein the holes are positioned relative to each other such that a hole-to-hole distance generates a unique spatial frequency signature in the imaging system's point spread function. | 02-21-2013 |
20120154233 | SMOOTH-WALLED FEEDHORN - A device for at least one of receiving and transmitting electromagnetic radiation includes a feedhorn having a substantially smooth, electrically conducting inner surface extending from an open end to a feed end, the inner surface being substantially rotationally symmetrical about a longitudinal axis, wherein an orthogonal distance from a point on the longitudinal axis to the substantially smooth, electrically conducting inner surface increases monotonically as the point on the longitudinal axis is selected at successively greater distances from the feed end of the feedhorn towards the open end of the feedhorn such that a profile of the substantially smooth, electrically conducting inner surface of the feedhorn is monotonically increasing. The feedhorn has an operating bandwidth and the feedhorn provides a maximum of −30 dB cross polarization response over at least 15% of the operating bandwidth. A method of producing a feedhorn for receiving or transmitting electromagnetic radiation includes determining a profile of an inner surface of the feedhorn based on constraints required to achieve a plurality of operating parameters, providing a pre-machined feedhorn having an initial inner surface, and machining the initial inner surface of the pre-machined feedhorn to substantially match the profile determined to achieve the plurality of operating parameters for the feedhorn. The determining the profile includes a constraint for the profile to be a monotonically increasing profile relative to a rotational symmetry axis of the inner surface of the feedhorn going from a narrow end to a wide end of the feedhorn. | 06-21-2012 |

20110117690 | Fabrication of Nanovoid-Imbedded Bismuth Telluride with low dimensional system - A new fabrication method for nanovoids-imbedded bismuth telluride (Bi—Te) material with low dimensional (quantum-dots, quantum-wires, or quantum-wells) structure was conceived during the development of advanced thermoelectric (TE) materials. Bismuth telluride is currently the best-known candidate material for solid-state TE cooling devices because it possesses the highest TE figure of merit at room temperature. The innovative process described here allows nanometer-scale voids to be incorporated in Bi—Te material. The final nanovoid structure such as void size, size distribution, void location, etc. can be also controlled under various process conditions. | 05-19-2011 |
20080202199 | Positioning System For Single Or Multi-Axis Sensitive Instrument Calibration And Calibration System For Use Therewith - A positioning and calibration system are provided for use in calibrating a single or multi axis sensitive instrument, such as an inclinometer. The positioning system includes a positioner that defines six planes of tangential contact. A mounting region within the six planes is adapted to have an inclinometer coupled thereto. The positioning system also includes means for defining first and second flat surfaces that are approximately perpendicular to one another with the first surface adapted to be oriented relative to a local or induced reference field of interest to the instrument being calibrated, such as a gravitational vector. The positioner is positioned such that one of its six planes tangentially rests on the first flat surface and another of its six planes tangentially contacts the second flat surface. A calibration system is formed when the positioning system is used with a data collector and processor. | 08-28-2008 |
