Colorectal Cancer - Prognosis
The key to a promising prognosis for colorectal cancer is early detection. More than 90 percent of patients treated at an early stage of the disease live at least five more years. The problem is that only one-third of colorectal cancer cases are found at an early stage. The longer it takes for cancer to be diagnosed, the more the survival rate drops. Once cancer has begun to spread, the five-year survival rate drops to 64 percent. If it has metastasized (spread, pronounced muh-TASS-tuh-sized) to more distant body parts, the survival rate is only about 7 percent.
