Colorectal Cancer - Prevention
Since the exact cause of colorectal cancer is not known, there is no certain way to avoid the disorder. The main priority, then, is to reduce one's risk factors and to follow a program of regular testing. Experts suggest that both men and women over the age of fifty should have annual tests for colorectal cancer. These tests should include a fecal occult blood test and an annual digital (finger) rectal examination. Sigmoidoscopy should be done every five years and a colonoscopy every five to ten years.
Two important keys in reducing risk factors include proper diet and exercise. Experts recommend a diet high in fruits and vegetables, breads, cereals, rice, pasta, beans, and other grain products. Avoiding high-fat and lowfiber foods is also recommended. A regular program of thirty minutes of physical exercise daily is also suggested.
