The Emergency-Free Home - Adult heimlich maneuver

To perform the technique on children and adults (8 years and older), hug the victim from behind and around the waist. Make a fist and place the thumb side against the stomach just above the navel but well below the lower tip of the breastbone. Grasp fist with your other hand. Pull your fist upward into victim's stomach with a quick upward thrust (see illustration). Repeat upward thrusts until obstruction is cleared or victim becomes unconscious. If victim becomes unconscious, begin emergency breathing. DO NOT administer back blows to children over age 8 or to adults.

If alone, you can perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself, either by using your own fist or leaning into the back of the chair to simulate the thrust.
