Defects and Diseases of the Spine - Spinal tuberculosis

Chronic pulmonary tuberculosis can spread to the skeletal system, including the vertebral column. Spinal tuberculosis, also known as Pott's disease , affects one or more vertebrae in children and young adults. It is currently a relatively rare disease.

The diseased vertebrae may collapse because of the pressure from the vertebrae above, resulting in a humpback deformity and possible paralysis of the lower limbs. The usual symptoms are back pain, stiffness, and limited movement. Antibiotics are administered to combat and cure the infection.
