Orienteering is a competitive and recreational sport involving navigating using map and compass. Some of the variations of the sport are: `classic' - point to point with no set course, but points must be taken in order (timed - fastest time wins) `short-O' - like classic, but over sprint distances `ski-O' - On cross country skis `night-O' - At night `score' - Points are worth different point values, and can be taken in any order. (most points within the time limit wins) `rogaine' - Like score, but over a much longer time span and distance. This sport is currently enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Orienteering maps are produced especially for the sport, and have very intricate detail not found on other types of maps, and high standards of cartography. There currently is a mailing list (orienteering@graphics.cornell.edu), which would be two-way gatewayed into this newsgroup. The current membership of the list is over 150, but many of those people are on Compu$erve. Some of the particpants on that mailing list include meet directors and course setters, professional and amateur map makers, and National Team members and coaches from several countries. Discussions that have taken place in the last year on this mailing list include: What is Orienteering? Where can I do it in my area? Where can I learn how to do it? What books are there about it? Orienteering Techniques Training for Orienteering Health problems affecting Orienteerers and other athletes Mapping techniques Computerized mapping using OCAD. Course Setting National and International Ranking methods Reports of the International Orienteering Federation Technical Committee. Events Results. The role of GPS (Global Positioning System) in Orienteering The World Orienteering Championships. The North American Ski-O Cup The use of Flourine waxes in Ski-O Because this has only been available as a mailing list in the past, we feel it didn't have the visibility to casual orienteers and new comers that it will as a newsgroup. Orienteering is going to be much more visible, we feel, as the World Championships in 1993 are going to be in the United States for the first time. Followups have been set to news.groups. Anybody who would like to discuss this should please do so there. Also, anybody who'd like to formalize a charter for this group, or to help me to do so, please feel free. Anybody who wants to join the mailing list, should send mail to orienteering-request@graphics.cornell.edu. -- Paul Tomblin, pt@compass.gvc.com (Not an official spokesman, blah, blah...) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Engineers aren't as smart as they like to be told they are." - told to me by Heather Killam the co-op. The details, background and proposed charter of the group follow. DETAILS Group name: rec.sport.orienteering Status: unmoderated Distribution: world Summary: A newsgroup for the discussion and dissemination of information on the sports of orienteering and rogaining. RFD issued by Tony Eva (tonyeva@bnr.ca) INTRODUCTION Orienteering is a competitive sport in which participants race against time through unfamiliar rough terrain (e.g. forests, woods, moors). Competitors carry a map and must visit fixed control points in a set order, but choose and follow their own route between the control points. When practised competitively, it is a sport which demands the highest degrees of physical fitness and mental skills. Rogaining is a competitive team sport where participants must visit as many set control points as possible, in any sequence, in a fixed time period (usually 24 hours). Once again, competitors carry a map and are free to choose and follow their own routes. Many people take part in orienteering and rogaining events on a recreational basis as well. Orienteering is currently practised as a national sport in most countries in Europe, North America and Australasia. In addition, several countries in Africa and Asia have national orienteering organisations. It has been recognised by the International Olympic Committee and the US Olympic Committee; World Cup competitions are held annually, and World Championships are held every two years. Rogaining is practised primarily in Australia and New Zealand, with interested followers in many other countries worldwide. Although it is a different sport from orienteering, it has many similarities, and discussions on rogaining matters are often directly relevant to orienteering, and vice versa. JUSTIFICATION At present, no newsgroup exists which is suitable for posts on the subjects of orienteering or rogaining. An orienteering mailing list exists at present, but the number of subscribers is currently nearly 600 and the traffic level has risen to the point where people are leaving the list. For the majority of mailing list subscribers, a newsgroup is a better way of coping with the number of articles. (Refer to Note 1.) In addition, a newsgroup will broaden the visibility of the sports to people who were previously unaware of them. To assist such people, a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) list can be maintained and regularly posted on the new group. CHARTER The proposed newsgroup will act as a forum for the discussion of all aspects of the sports of orienteering and rogaining. Such aspects would include: * orienteering techniques for training and competition * orienteering equipment (e.g. clothes and compasses) * orienteering meet/event administration * orienteering products (e.g. mapping and event administration software) * orienteering- and rogaining-related activities, e.g. map surveying, map drafting * announcement of orienteering and rogaining events or meets * results from such events, including World Cup and World Championship events * introduction of the sports to a wider audience * similar information on related sports such as mountain marathons and fjellorientering * any other topics which may be of interest to the world-wide orienteering and rogaining community. The scope of the group would be orienteers and rogainers of all age groups and abilities, from all countries. NOTES 1 In order to continue supporting orienteers who do not have access to Usenet, a mechanism will be put in place to forward articles posted to rec.sport.orienteering to the existing mailing list, which will continue to be available in its present forms (individual messages or digest). Similarly, articles sent to the mailing list will be posted to the newsgroup. 2 A WWW home page exists for those who wish to find out more about the sport of orienteering. The URL is: http://www2.aos.princeton.edu/rdslater/orienteering/ 3 This RFD is being issued in concordance with the guidelines set in the "How to create a new usenet newsgroup" FAQ regularly posted to news.announce.newgroups. Please refer to this article if you have any questions about the newsgroup creation. 4 Unless the discussion indicated a need to resubmit a new RFD, the CFV will be posted approximately three to four weeks after the posting of this RFD. 5 This RFD was (cross)-posted to the following groups: news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, rec.backcountry, rec.running, rec.skiing.nordic, rec.scouting, rec.sport.misc and sent to the orienteering mailing list (orienteering-request@graphics.cornell.edu). Followups to this RFD are directed to news.groups, where discussion will take place.
