This is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural details are below. Newsgroup line: rec.sport.disc.discgolf Disc Golf: equipment, courses, tournaments, etc. RATIONALE: rec.sport.disc.discgolf Disc Golf is a growing sport with an increasing number of players interested in discussing various aspects of the sport. To date, the rec.sport.disc group has been used regularly to discuss the sport. There have been a number of postings opposed to the idea, advocating keeping one single group for all disc sport topics. The main reasons to keep a single newsgroup include: -- There isn't enough interest in disc golf separately to justify its own newsgroup -- Many people are interested in all disc topics, including disc golf -- It's been proposed before and nothing has come of it. Here are justifications for creating a separate group for disc golf: -- Interest in disc golf is extensive and growing: There are over 12,000 members of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) (www.pdga.com). Searching for "disc golf" at www.yahoo.com gets 2 categories and 33 sites. A search of altavista.digital.com yields over 3,000 results. The sport of disc golf is growing, and interest is spreading to people who are not interested in all disc sports. In DejaNews (www.dejanews.com), rec.sport.disc received 1165 posts in April 98. 264 were identified as being related to disc golf (by including dg in the subject line); based on informal sampling, there are an estimated 50-100 additional posts related to disc golf (but their authors did not follow the "" subject line convention.) 10 posts per day (300/month) should be sufficient to justify a separate newsgroup - and this number will grow, as the sport continues to grow and when a newsgroup focused on the topic becomes available. -- There are many people who are only interested in disc golf: The largest numbers of postings to rec.sport.disc concern the sport of ultimate (estimated at 60-65%). This can have a chilling effect on the less frequent newsgroup disc golf readers, who may only read the group occasionally, and are discouraged by the number of postings that are not relevant to disc golf. The newsgroup has adopted a convention (e.g. "/" in subject line) in recognition that there are many readers who are interested only in disc golf. Clearly, this indicates a significant readership interested only in disc golf (very few posts about ultimate use the corresponding in the subject line.) The convention presents an unnecessary obstacle to the uninitiated. If we make it easier for the less sophisticated disc golf readers, we will encourage them to read and participate in the discussion about disc golf. Filtering through large numbers of irrelevant postings is harder, especially for less experienced readers. The "burden" of subscribing to multiple newsgroups is designed to be smaller than the mechanisms in place to filter out other topics. -- Maybe now the time is right. Several posts in rec.sport.disc indicate that the request for a separate discussion for disc golf has been a recurring theme in the newsgroup. These requests will continue to recur until this need is met. A search of ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/news.announce.newgroups/rec/ for a previous RFD to start a separate newsgroup yields no previous attempt. CHARTER: rec.sport.disc.discgolf To discuss topics relevant to disc golf, including but not limited to: -- Equipment - discs, bags, targets -- Courses - where to play, new course announcements, requests for help to build new courses -- Tournaments - announcements, results, heroes, winners -- Associations - Professional Disc Golf Association, Recreational Disc Golf Association -- Rules -- Publications - Disc Golf News No binary posting is allowed. No spamming or off-topic posting is allowed. END CHARTER. PROCEDURE: This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroup should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens. All discussion of this proposal should be cross-posted to news.groups and rec.sport.disc. This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any questions about the process. IMPORTANT VOTING PROCEDURE NOTES: READ THIS BEFORE VOTING The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine the genuine interest in reading the proposed newsgroup, and soliciting votes from uninterested parties defeats this purpose. Do *not* distribute this CFV; intead, direct people to the official CFV as posted to news.announce.newgroups. Distributing specific voting instructions or pre-marked copies of this CFV is considered vote fraud. This is a public vote: All email addresses, names and votes will be listed in the final RESULT post. The name used may be either a real name or an established Usenet handle. At most one vote is allowed per person or per account. Duplicate votes will be resolved in favor of the most recent valid vote. Voters must mail their ballots directly to the votetaker. Anonymous, forwarded, or proxy votes are not valid, nor are votes mailed from WWW/HTML/CGI forms (which should not exist). Votes from nonexistent accounts are also invalid, and the votetaker will reject any "munged" address he cannot decipher immediately. Please direct any questions to the votetaker at . HOW TO VOTE: Extract the ballot from the CFV by deleting everything before and after the "BEGINNING OF BALLOT" and "END OF BALLOT" lines. Don't worry about the spacing of the columns or any quote characters (">") that your reply inserts. Please, DO NOT send the entire CFV back to me! Fill in the ballot as shown below. A five day discussion period follows this announcement. Unless serious allegations of voting irregularities are raised, the group may not be voted on again for six months. Questions about the proposed group should be directed to the proponent. Proponent: Bill Fitler Proponent: Brian Moon Proponent: Bill Burns Votetaker: Neil Crellin RATIONALE: rec.sport.disc.discgolf Disc Golf is a growing sport with an increasing number of players interested in discussing various aspects of the sport. To date, the rec.sport.disc group has been used regularly to discuss the sport. CHARTER: rec.sport.disc.discgolf To discuss topics relevant to the sport of disc golf, including but not limited to: -- Equipment - discs, bags, targets -- Courses - where to play, new course announcements, requests for help to build new courses -- Tournaments - announcements, results, heroes, winners -- Associations - Professional Disc Golf Association, Recreational Disc Golf Association, Disc Golf Course Designers group -- Rules -- Publications - Disc Golf News No binary posting is allowed.
