Please note that one major goal of this reorganization is to help the non-MLM groups by reducing unwanted MLM traffic in those groups. This RFD initiates a 25-day discussion period. Ron Dippold will send out the CFV on May 1, 1994. Discussion will take place in news.groups, and all follow-up posts should be directed to that group. Purpose ======= misc.business.multilevel.misc would host generic MLM discussions and discussions about all MLMs except Amway. misc.business.multilevel.amway would host discussions specific to Amway and its distributor organizations. Blatant ads would be discouraged in both groups. Rationale ========= The existing MLM group, alt.business.multi-level, hosts a lively and active discussion, with typically 300-400 articles per week. It has more readership than 30% of the existing misc.* groups, even though it is carried at only 55% of Usenet sites. There have been problems in the past where MLM people who did not receive alt.* at their site tried to start MLM discussions in other groups. This was not welcomed, and resulted in hard feelings all around. A misc.* MLM group would allow these people access to an MLM group, and help reduce the unwanted MLM traffic in other groups. Widely-available misc.* groups would also give a logical followup location when Amway or other MLM discussions erupt in other groups. Why two groups? Amway is by far the largest MLM in the world, and represents the largest MLM population on the net. Amway also has the most detractors, and generates the most heated discussions in groups such as misc.consumers. Amway discussions also overwhelm alt.business.multi-level, to the point where many non-Amway people have left. They said they wanted to discuss general MLM issues, but were not willing to wade through all the Amway arguments. This situation will almost certainly get worse with the wider availability of the misc.* group and the potential followups from other groups. A separate Amway group would allow the Amway folks to discuss the many issues that are specific to Amway, and would allow the non-Amway people to carry on productive conversations. Amway people (pro and con) would, of course, be welcome in the non-Amway group, as long as they discussed general MLM issues.
