Although this RFD is specifically for a research forum, a secondary purpose is to find one or more individuals willing to moderate misc.business.marketing.misc. If you are interested in moderating a general-interest marketing newsgroup (but not misc.business.marketing.research), please contact Bill Sherman at the e-mail address above. RATIONALE There are 400,000 marketing, advertising and public relations managers in the U.S., and most use marketing research of some type or another. In addition, many are full-time research analysts. Marketing research is a high-growth industry: the number of analysts is expected to grow by 34% between 1986 and 2000. Marketing research is heavily dependent on computers. Virtually everyone in the industry uses a PC, and it is likely a large number of researchers are online. Marketing research is an information-intensive activity. Information is the industry's medium of exchange, and its practitioners are adept in collecting, analyzing and synthesizing raw data into actionable information. To do their jobs well, researchers need access to a variety of information, both practical and abstract, in a timely manner. There would be no shortage of issues to discuss on misc.business.marketing.research. Changes in attitudes, lifestyles, business imperatives and technology assure a constantly evolving field for years to come. In short, marketing research is a dynamic, evolving and complex field, and its practitioners need an online forum where they can go to exchange information and discuss emerging issues. Misc.business.marketing.research will provide a vehicle for research professionals from around the world to communicate with one another quickly and efficiently. By aiding its individual members, the newsgroup will increase the total added value that the industry provides to its clients. Subscribers of marketing-related mailing lists will have a forum for addressing research issues without the burdens of mailbox management (sifting through dozens of new articles every day, organizing various discussion threads, unsubscribing and resubscribing when leaving town, changing address headers depending on whether a reply is to the entire list or to an individual, etc.) CHARTER: misc.business.marketing.research The misc.business.marketing.research newsgroup will be open to discussion of all aspects of marketing research, from nuts-and-bolts issues like recommendations for focus group facilities to more academic issues like advice on conjoint analysis. Our plan is for this newsgroup to become the on-line meeting place for research professionals to exchange information and advise one another. PROCEDURE: This RFD is in accordance with the Guidelines for Newsgroup Creation. All follow-up messages should be directed to news.groups, a newsgroup dedicated to the discussion of proposals for new newsgroups. Follow-up messages should not be cross-posted to the other groups listed above. If a Call for Votes (CFV) is issued, it will be distributed to all of these groups. This is NOT a call for votes. Please DO NOT vote now. After a discussion period of 21 to 30 days, if there are no overwhelming objections to the proposed group, there will be a Call for Votes (CFV) posted to the groups to which were posted this RFD. The voting period is at least 21 days. If at the end of that time the proposal receives 100 more "yes" votes than "no" votes, and at least twice as many "yes" votes as "no" votes, then misc.business.marketing.research will receive authorization to be created.
