Actually, some sites sometimes seem to miss posts for a while (ie
months) before picking back up. I did something similar to what you
suggest a couple of years ago to a couple of FAQs I maintained. For
the most part, the archives wiped out the documents but there are
some (well, one at least that I have taken the time to substantiate
faqs.jmas.co.jp) that don't seem to archive properly for whatever
reason (ie poor news feed). As a result, they are not an up-to-date
archive and may miss the farewell post.
In my situation, one of the FAQs was a one part document. The
version that exists on this site is dated 9 Jan 2000. This was a
monthly post using the robo-poster at MIT. It was in the fall of
2000 that the farewell post went out.
The other document started life as a one part post and in 1994 became
a three parter with the new parts taking the old archive name and
tacking /part1 /part2 and /part3 on the end. This site has the old
one part version dated 14 December 1996 but the post header shows 15
August 1994. The three parts are dated 8 Jan 2000, 26 Sept 1999, 26
Sept 1999 respectively. This was also robo-posted from MIT on a
monthly basis. Farewell post was also in the fall of 2000.
In all cases, the farewell post is not archived on this site. Of
interest, the FAQ I continue to maintain was last posted earlier this
month and it is this most recent post that is properly archived at
this site.
