this has been discussed at length in news.software.readers -- but
before the advent of www.faqs.org (with its search engine etc.)

perhaps it should be brought up again.

(my local-spool-only newsreader can't just go off and ftp a file, but
it does have a FAQ option on the Goto Group dialog box which searches
for `FAQ' or `Frequently Asked Q' or `news.answers' in the headers.)
