My policy is to put my efforts towards the comp.software.testing
FAQ in proportion to the interest that readers indicate and the amount
of help they offer. At times, I've made many additions to it because
there was a lot of good material coming in. But other times (such as
now), ideas get launched and then wither on the vine. I simply take
no action on ideas that don't reach consensus or get enough feedback.
I'm also frustrated at the state of Usenet, and unfortunately, I think
the group is losing a lot of readers (I have some old data from
sunsite, but nothing recent). After reading some of the Usenet 2
material, I'm not yet convinced that it solves enough of the problems.
I'm seeing people move to mailing lists as an alternative. See my
article "Usenetters Leaving the Homeland" at
http://www.august.com/dfw_uug/newsletters/1997/newsletter_9707.html.
Someone mentioned the web as an alternative, and for reference
material (like FAQs), I think most of us agree it's superior to
Usenet. But for interactive discussions, web chat groups haven't
taken hold.
I think you've given me the topic for my next article. :-)
