At least for me, the problem is (a) the software doesn't run on my box,
because it's usually Windows-based, and I refuse to use or support
Microsoft products on ethical grounds, and (b) I don't like realtime
interaction (e.g. chat, IRC) because it forces me to bend my schedule
to accomodate it and it eliminates my option to edit.

That's an excellent idea. I may just borrow that for an invitation-only
Unix experts list that I'm thinking of starting due to excessive noise
on the Sun-Managers (and other) mailng lists.
