How about we summarize and lay this one to rest?

It's clear that there's an upper maximum to the line length. This
lies somewhere between 70 and 80 characters, with 75 or 76 being a
good choice. (Netscape, for example, wraps text to 76-character lines
when saving from HTML to text format.)

It's strongly recommended that all FAQ maintainers format the plain
text version of their FAQ so that lines are wrapped at their chosen
line length. If your newsreader doesn't wrap for you, make sure you
do it yourself before posting. If your newsreader does wrap lines,
make sure you haven't already wrapped them at a slightly
longer length,
otherwise you'll end up with a
"sawtooth"
structure like this.

Those who prefer narrower columns, perhaps even with margin spaces on
the left side, are free to choose a smaller line length but should
keep in mind that their document will become correspondingly longer.
