I fall on the side of the crowd that thinks that munging one's
header is a bad idea as it probably hurts more than it helps. For
example, I *hate* unsolicited telephone calls with a passion, but I
list my number for the benefit of my friends and acquaintances.

I don't think that legislation will help, although I'd like to see
unsolicited email added to the unsolicited fax legislation--nothing
more.

On the other hand, someone could make a decent living processing
class-action suits on behalf of the spammees. Hmmm.... A low 10%
cut of a $500 penalty times 1,000,000 spammees (conservative number)
would be $500,000,000 penalty for the spammer and $5,000,000 for the
attorney. Per spam.

The Internet is becoming like other mediums such as television and
newspapers in it is a target for advertising. There is really
nothing we can do to change that, so the real solution is a billing
scheme whereby your connection is paid by the advertiser. The
advantages of this is that your connection will be subsidized by
advertisers. And, judicious use of procmail filters which will
mature in time will allow you to filter this stuff, much as you go
for a potty break during television commercials.
