I find this obviously incorrect in the general case. The length
of the generated thread is very roughly correlated to the number
of groups to which the original article was crossposted. And
it's easy to crosspost from most newsreaders. So you get an
article crossposted to 5 groups instead of multiposted to 2
groups, and end up with 5 times as much storage and bandwidth.
Crossposting is a good idea. Its consequences are not what we
would assume from introspection. Like a lot of things in the
world.
