I will work on that list software today. I apologize for the long delay.
I have found an sgml tool which I think may solve all of our problems.
It is designed with faq's in mind. I've installed it and read the
documentation and it looks very promising. We may not need to develop
anything ourselves.
On your advice, Andreas, I added comp.lang.sgml to my news feed, and
within about three days someone mentioned the linuxdoc-sgml-1.5.tar.gz
package. This is the package used by the Linux-Documentation-Project.
It looks incredible. From the README file:
"Linuxdoc-SGML is a text-formatting package based on SGML (Standard
Generalized Markup Language), which allows you to produce LaTeX,
HTML, GNU info, LyX, RTF, and plain ASCII (via groff) from a single source;
due to the flexible nature of SGML many other target formats are possible.
"This system is tailored for writing technical software documentation,
an example of which are the Linux HOWTO documents. However, there is nothing
Linux-specific about this package; it can be used for many other types of
documentation on many other systems. The name is simply derived from its
use for the Linux HOWTO documents. It should be useful for all kinds of
printed and online documentation."
It mentions faq's in the documentation a few times. I'm going to try to
get my faq converted over before the next release date. You can get it
from:
ftp://ftp.cc.gatech.edu/pub/people/gregh/linuxdoc-sgml/linuxdoc-sgml-1.5.tar.gz
ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/docs/linuxdoc-sgml-1.5.tar.gz
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/utils/text/linuxdoc-sgml-1.5.tar.gz
The only thing that it doesn't achieve from our list is DOS compatibility
for the majority of people out there. If we were going to attempt a
development effort, I think it may be wise to work on porting this tool
to DOS.
Let me know what you think Andreas. There may be no need for that mailing
list after all.
Take care,
Vic.
