The way that happened to me was when I moved my FAQ maintenence to a
different text-editor where a "smart-quote" snuck into my FAQ. Just one
"binary" character (>128 ASCII?) caused my whole FAQ to be MIME-encoded as
you described. Took me a while (and the help of this list) to figure that
one out.
