As long as it is noted somewhere that such and such companies have paid a
one time payment (or regular salary) to produce this document, and if
the payer has any editorial control that too is mentioned, then the reader
of the document has been adequately prepared. In the case of reporters,
one assumes by reading a publication that it's employees are being paid
by that publication. I would not however expect to assume that because
a reporter was reporting on Exxon that s/he was being paid by Exxon.
