This isn't exactly religion, to many people, but here goes,
nevertheless ...
One piece of reading which I've enjoyed a lot is the "bible" for
Perl programming, _Programming Perl_. There is one part where the
authors discuss different optimization techniques, and argue for
diametrically opposite solutions, with good reasons for both. Not only
is this "fair", it's also thought-provoking, and fun.
I was going to quote a snippet here but I'll spare you. Get the
book. It's eminently readable and a knowledge of Perl couldn't hurt
anybody, these days.
Don't get the book. It's not up to date with respect to Perl 5 which
is what everybody use these days anyway. And leave the programming to
programmers, you'll only hurt yourself, and piss off the pig, as the
saying goes.
