I would be terribly tempted to add at the bottom "and if you had done
enough reading in news.announce.newusers, you would have known this
already". Down, Danny, down.

I've seen similar mechanisms. I think the perl FAQ maintainers even
occasionally use a script which extracts the appropriate portion from
the FAQ.

Can this sort of response have any long-term affect, or do you have to
continually educate a stream of new readers? If I had any hope of
building critical mass, I'd be more motivated to hold people's hands
for a while.
