One person was hired in part because of the FAQ he maintains, and
one wrote his FAQ at the request of his employer. Naturally
enough, the respective employers actively support these
maintainers' work.
Five other people's employers also actively support their FAQ
work, though not necessarily paying them for 100% of the time they
spend on FAQs. Typically these companies feel they're getting
publicity, attracting potential customers to their Web sites, etc..
Three people's employers don't actively support the FAQ work they
do, but do allow them to use company-owned equipment and
connectivity if they work (at least mostly) on their own time.
Two maintainers' employers are aware of their FAQ work and tacitly
support it, i.e., accept it as research work or a publication (in
an academic setting), in one case partly for publicity reasons.
In the applicable section of the FAQbook, I wrote that although some
people's employers support their work, FAQs are all maintained by
volunteers: nobody writes a FAQ for profit. I may end up rephrasing
that a bit in later revisions.
