I started when I found that a number of ftp sites in the Anonymous FTP
Sitelist were outdated. Just when I wanted to ask the maintainer if there
was a newer version, because there was none on the regular sites, he
posted a note saying he was quitting the maintenance because of the work
involved. Later that year I decided that I would still like to have a
list handy so I took the last release and updated and reformatted it
to its current format. Since then (about 2 years ago), the list has grown
to a ~53K FAQ and a 20 part sitelist (totalling some 1.1Mb).
The funny thing is that only 2 people ever complained about the size
(both were BBS users who either got it in 3000 parts because of lousy
software or didn't know what Usenet was). I've received mostly
compliments on it and those are pretty encouraging to keep it up.
Maintenance takes me a couple of hours a month, mostly checking sites
and some editing work.
