The faq-server and I are getting along again.

Lots of people picked up on the MIME encoding being introduced somewhere
along the line. Most guessed something recently changed with my own
mailer, based on the mailer I'm using to send messages to this list. I
have changed to sending most messages like this one using the MIME-aware
Eudora on the Mac now, but I'm still updating the faq-server using the
VAX/VMS system I always have, so that wasn't quite it.

What did change was where I maintain my FAQ, from the VAX to the Mac (using
BBEdit). Steve Summit and Bill Wohler split the prize for guessing
apparently correctly that I had introduced at least one 8-bit character
into the file. While the VAX mailer doesn't seem to notice, the presence
of 8-bit characters would seem to cause the faq-server to MIME-encode its
messages. Or at least I'm fairly confident the VAX wasn't doing it,
there's no sign the VAX knows what MIME is at all. BBEdit has a "Zap
Gremlins" feature which can be used to eliminate 8-bit characters, among
other things. I did that, and my problems appear to be solved.

I can't see where any 8-bit characters got in in the first place, but I'm
suspicious of BBEdit's "smartquotes," which I've now turned off. :)

Thanks to all for the help,

-Michael
