| Is there a mechanism for replacing the links to the posted version of
| a document with ones to a native HTML version provided by the FAQ
| maintainer in question ?
That is what I intended to do when I started
and that is why I suggested the URL:-auxheader-line.
But replacement doesn't mix with the by-group and by-archive hierarchies.
Your native HTML version doesn't have links into those hierarchies.
Also, results of full text searches would be even more confusing.
The URL-line in the auxiliary header still serves a useful purpose.
Our archive is for searchers, jumping through hierarchies.
Once they find what they are looking for, they can look at the
proper thing throught the URL:-line.
The only way forward I see is, for articles with an URL:-line, to
delete the body of the article, leaving header and auxheader info.
The benefit would be a reduction in data transport.
The loss would be very confusing full text search results.
I think I'll stick to the current set-up and urge everybody
to add an URL:-subheader if applicable.
| The plain ASCII and USENET versions of the Linux FAQ don't work well
| when an attempt is made to turn things that look like URL's into
| links, because I haven't included URLs of any of the FTP sites etc.
| into the text. They're present in the HTML version, but the actual
| text says something more human-readable, like "on sunsite.unc.edu in
| /pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO".
It's up to you, but you could write down both, helping dumb converters
like ours.
Also, the url notation is recognized by ascii ftp-clients like ncftp.
