Meanwhile, an update to my copyright problem in the UK. Briefly,
most of an old version of my FAQ has appeared, only slightly edited,
in two new UK magazines, without my permission, with attribution of the
material to someone else. I found myself solicitor and he wrote
letters to both publishers asking for a printed apology and an amount
of money for compensation. Although I originally just wanted an
apology, my solicitor advised me to ask for money too, to give
the publishers something to haggle with, so to speak, rather than
to demand one thing from them.
A reply finally came through a few days ago. The interesting bits from
the letter from the publisher are "[the staff said that] some content
was taken from The Net without appreciating the implications" and then
describes "this uncertain situation". I have a cheque for 300 pounds
(#200 was asked for) but no mention of a printed apology (yet). It's
costing me #75 for a copyright notice, #60 for the first complaint letter
and #40 for a second to the first publisher and then #25 for a copy of
the first letter to the other publisher.
The first publisher is still printing the same June FAQ in issue 3 ...
I have contacted all the other editors and a net writer and offered to
put them on my free mailing list for new FAQs, to pre-empt further
infringements, and this has resulted in editors offering me money to
prepare regular custom material.
Interesting times.
