I chose editor not because I think it accurately describes my role as
FAQ maintainter (I wrote well over 75% of the FAQ), but because I felt
it was more effective in conveying the concept to people more used to
dealing with magazines and other more traditional media.

FAQ maintainers (regardless of whether they actually write or collect
information) are the final arbitors of what goes into the FAQ. In this
role they are closer to the role of a magazine editor than a magazine
writer. It is quite common for magazine editors to contribute to their
own publication so the parallel works here also. And finally, in the eyes
of PR flacks, editors are more important than writers and hence more
likely to obtain the information requested.
