First of all, Ping, thanks for an excellent summary.

What would people think of a special mail alias for checking FAQ, say
faq-checker@rtfm.mit.edu?

You would mail it a FAQ, and it would return a list of problems, which
you could then resolve before submitting. We could also put in a
pointer to this into our autoreply text. The existing save-faq script
would require some fairly trivial changes for this.

Here's what a sample output looks like right now:

Our automated testing script found some points where your article does
not appear to conform to the *.answers article guidelines. Please
resolve these problems before using the faq-server.

The problem(s) are the following:

Your article also is posted to the moderated group news.announce.newusers.
This script cannot know wether you have approval
from its moderator.

Your article has the E-Mail address guro@foo.com in the Followup-To: field,
which is illegal.

Your article was posted to talk.foo, but not to talk.answers.

Your article has the archive name comp-foo-faq, which appears not
to be approved by the *.answers moderators

The *.answers groups are not listed last in the Newsgroups line.

Thomas
