Yep, same here. I've left in the originals and stuck in a reference to
another file that lists only mirrors of popular sites:
garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder42.zip (42 is a version number)
And they can always check my Anonymous FTP Sitelist for stuff not
listed there.

Some servers try to redirect users to mirrors with an alias that
connects you to a mirror, try mirror.archive.umich.edu (last time I
tried it, it didn't work unfortunately, but it's a good idea).
You could list such an alias.
I'm now adding another item to each entry which lists the preferred
URL for each site. Maintainers can take the easiest way to accessing
the archive and anyone that can use URL's can take that way. They can
use the ohio-state server to search for something and click their way
to the site in the way the maintainer prefers. By default it will have
ftp:// URL's but that will probably change soon.
