I don't know what Bengt's mechanism is, but I too have implemented
such a beast. It scans a group, checking for articles crossposted
to news.answers (or any other groups, say a local "*.answers" group).
In addition, it scans for the "Article-Names:" header, as defined
in the son-of-rfc1036 for tagging of periodic postings. See:
ftp://ftp.pop.psu.edu/pub/src/news/listfaq.tar.Z
Rather than trying to re-invent the wheel by keeping a 'FAQ database',
I use the existing article database: NOV. (via XHDR). Just add
"Xref:full" and "Article-Names:full" to your overview.fmt. (not
even necessary, but will be rather slow otherwise)
Unfortunately, this program uses NNTP only, but the theory is sound.
